Literally all of the buttons had been automatically disabled on my Deck, because the deck had automatically selected a Community profile from "ScottM" where he had disabled all of the buttons for desktop configuration.
I had to then use the touch screen to navigate into Steam > Settings > Configure Desktop configuration to select the Valve default controller layout.
A right mess on for new users, but managed to fix it.
The other day i got the Steam deck Dock, I connected my Xbox One controller, I wanted to switch to desktop to change something quickly and guess what ?
Somebody had created a community profile for the Xbox controller with all the buttons disabled for desktop mode and the deck had auto switched to this community profile.
I had to go pick up the deck from of the dock, go to Steam > Settings > Configure Desktop configuration. Then I realised you can't configure external controllers using this window.
You need to go to Steam > Big Picture Mode > Base Configurations > Desktop Configuration then select the default Valve desktop configuration to overwrite the community config for your external controller.
These people are clearly playing a joke on the community and Valve hasn't even clicked on that the Deck shouldn't auto select a config for desktop mode for new users.
That should be the only mode that doesn't auto select a community profile, as you don't have the quick access, built in controller config editor like in Gaming mode by simply clicking the Steam button.
This is for Game Mode controller configs, not necessarily Mitsie's situation of Desktop mode configurations:
