If you like things working out of the box without any problem solving or configuration, then don't. That doesn't mean that most of the games won't work without configs, most of them are working great. Just saying, that it could be possible to do some configuration to your fittings.
Also depends on the games you are playing. For me the Steam Deck is the perfect "handheld" for Indie Games. Indie Games runs very well on the steam deck and are not demanding in aspect of the hardware. So the fans don't get loud and the battery life is very acceptable.
I would not play games like Cyberpunk 2077 on Steam Decks hardware, unless I can stream it via Moonlight (Nvidia-Linux), Xbox Cloud Gaming or Remote Play. Atleast I have other options to play AAA Games with max settings and steady 60 fps on the Steam Deck and it's working great. Also nice, I don't need to install the games on my Steam Deck, when I stream or play over the cloud. Some Games need more than 50 GB and that hurts me on the Steam Deck.
But older AAA games like Borderlands 2 runs very well on the SD.
I'm having the 512 GB version btw. and my storeage are almost full. Only 40-50 GB left. But I still don't have bought a MicroSD Card... thinking of buying one with 512 GB Samsung Evo.
Also perfect device for emulating...
Yesterday I found an application on the desktop mode which offer Movie Streams from different platforms. Not the best quality but still.... leading me to the next oppotunity to connect the TV to my Steam Deck. There was an option on the app, which will connect automaticly to you SmartTV, but this didn't work out of the box.
Long story short: Yes, worth it.
I think I will get all new iteration of the console, the thing I love much is that they worked with AMD to design and produce a new APU just for it, they just don't plug existing things together, and hope it wotks, they invent new devices and push things outside the limits, this is the right directions.
Also the fact you don't buy games but connected to a library probably initiated years ago is a big big plus. I prefer the Deck with 1000 games than my Switch with 10 downgraded games with poor graphics.
I'm sure that this Deck is just the beginning of a new era, a new competition, Valve sets new standards for the futur, others are asleep for now
I think only you can answer that....
If you go for the 512 version, your pretty much stuck with the screen as it is, and I do like to protect all my stuff anyway ;)
Fit a screen protector over that nonsense, then well, lol, get good glasses.
I like having 'choice' :)
Replacing the steam deck enteral drive is easy and took 20min
I got a 1TB from Microcenter for about $110. I have twice the space of the 512 GB model for less than the cost of the 256 GB model.
This was my sentiment, and your mileage may vary depending on which screen protector you get. I found the sensitivity of the touch screen took an absolute nose dive though. I took it off and now I'm using it raw.
As for OP's question, it really depends on you. Do you see yourself regularly in a situation where portable PC gaming would come in handy? Also ask yourself which games you would want to play on it, then do a reality check to make sure the Steam Deck is even suitable for those games. There are some very popular games that don't work due to certain anti-cheat measures. You're not going to be playing Fortnite. You're not going to be taking advantage of your Game Pass subscription. You could try and install Windows so these things work, but that comes with it's own set of drawbacks that might make it not worth it.
Games that are "Steam Deck Verified" will work wonderfully. Games that are "Playable" will work, but you might need to use the touch screen or virtual keyboard to input a name or get past a launcher. Games that are "unknown" or "unsupported" may work anyway. Check ProtonDB[www.protondb.com] to get an idea of what to expect.
