Depends how experienced you are at taking small devices apart. I bought an IfixIt kit but stripped a screw because I used the wrong screwdriver head. I'm lucky the cell phone repair shop only charged me $20 to get the screw out. Make sure your using the phillips head indicated by a PH if you replace the NVME drive yourself.

That’s depends on 2 things.

1. Does the anti glare screen seem like something you want?

2. Do you feel confident opening up the steam deck?

I swapped my 64 with 512 and it took about 25min or so from start to OS install.

It’s rather easy honestly and the only part that sucks is unplugging the battery. Don’t use any pry tools on the battery cable just use your finger nail to slide it off the connector.

The reason I say this is because if you slip with a pry tool there’s a good chance you will tear a cable off from something else.

Look up how to open it

I should have went with the 256GB model instead of 512. Games of massive size I play on my PC at max settings/resolution.

64 GB should suffice as well since the majority of indie titles are just a couple GBs which should be enough for ~20 games. Also depends on how annoying you find uninstalling games when out of space to be.

You can also stream it using the Steam Link app.

I bought the top model less due to storage and more for the anti-glare screen.

I bought the 256 and the moment I saw the screen, I regretted.
I would for sure now go for the 512 GB version

You've got 14 days to return it as per their hardware refund policy.

Also, how much do you want to help support future hardware development?

I went with the 64GB model and swapped in a 1TB SSD from Microcenter. Works beautifully, and I have twice the storage of the 512GB model for less than the price of the 256GB model.

There's that etched anti-glare screen, but I think I prefer the glossy sharp look anyway.

The device streams so well it has become one of the reasons I recommend prospective buyers to pick up the cheaper models.

yes

The anti-glare GLASS screen is worth it on its own. Not to mention having a 512GB SSD from the manufacturer means little/no risk of you breaking it by doing the swap yourself, which is a good thing.

Anti Glare is absolutely amazing, but you dont need the 512 to get it, Armorsuit "Military shield" is pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ great after you give it around 2 days to cure (you can still play it just looks slightly hazy/rainbowy).
Sounds like you're fine with opening it up, so go with a 64, grab the 1Tb (make sure its 2230 not 2242 or 2280) and if you find yourself randomly tilting the screen to get the best angle or to try to reduce reflections (I play almost exclusively inside and it was a problem for me) slap either the armorsuit protector on, or just buy the antiglare screen from ifixit (pretty sure the valve screen has a more clear image but doesnt refract light as much).

Lol wut? The exact kingston drive the deck uses is 47 bucks on ebay. It's an nvme drive, not alien technology.

(yes, you can get a cheaper main drive but at what cost? performance, reliability, your steam deck?!?) If you add a screen protector then it suddenly becomes more expensive for less than ideal parts... that you have to put together. Finally, unless you are looking to download the interweb, the 512 ssd and mSD are more than manageable.

not entirely.

the 512 SSD i bought was 49.99 and it benchmarks at 3400 mb/s which is far faster than the 512 stock drive

i also bought a 512 sd card, usb-c thumb drive, and screen protector.

399.99 steam deck
49.99 SSD
59.99 sd card
12.99 usb c flash drive
7.99 screen protector

530.95
