Replacing the stock ssd on steam deck.
I was looking through amazon buying stuff for my new on the way deck. I am wondering, is it very hard or risky replacing your own ssd?

I have built several PC's and am comfortable taking stuff apart generally. But are there any no no's or pitfalls I should know about?

Just be careful with the screws. They're good, but a little soft. Also, my screw points were different than the first steam deck disassembly video, so I goofed. Do yourself a favor and don't assume it'll be the exact same as theirs.
The snaps on the steam deck are pretty tough too, so, spudger beware lol.

Other than that, you should be fine. load your recovery on a drive or sd card, test it before taking out the drive, swap drives, recover, done.

And... unless you want to have a heart attack... use usb 3 devices, it'll take uncomfortably long if you don't.

Take a look here: https://de.ifixit.com/Anleitung/Steam+Deck+SSD+tauschen/148989

It is the German version of the site, but you can change it to english ;)

Thank you very much! Thanks for the screw tips! Testing before you swap is a good idea too lol. I probably would have just assumed.

One more question now that I have you here, any 2230 will do? Any limitations?

How does doing this ssd swap effect your warranty?

it took me about 30min to swap out the drive. theres 2 parts that are a bit of a pain and thats getting the spudger to pop the first clip and unplugging the battery. the rest is fairly simple and just removing some screws and removing the old drive. just make sure you re-use the SSD shield on the new drive, it slides right off.

Before removing SSD and installing the new one, after you disconnect the battery, make sure to power drain the device, by holding the power button down for around 6 seconds. Make sure to insert youre new SSD into the metal sleeving the old SSD was in.
