Steam Deck

Steam Deck

Is there ANYONE else out there that just doesn't like this thing?
So, I've got a half decent PC spec.
I7 12700 / 32gb ddr5 / huwaei mateview 32 inch widescreen but I've hit a brick wall when it comes to using it. Nothing takes my fancy apart from Rimworld which I purchased recently.
Thought I'd get a bit more use out the steam deck when it arrived but it's tiny screen and awkward controls just leave me utterly disinterested.
Had it a few days now and I keep thinking, stick with it and see if I can adapt but everytime I switch it on I just get annoyed with everything about it.

I can't be the only one that feels this way. Surely.

It's going on gumtree if this continues.

Just don't get on with it. At all.

The steam deck is not for everyone some people are not going to like it

The steam deck is similar to the Nintendo switch I know people say to not compare it to the Nintendo switch but it is a Nintendo switch but if it was a PC

I didn’t know if I would like it or hate it because I already have a high end PC but I have to say I love the steam deck

When the first Surface Pro came out (2013), I tried to create a hardware hack with a bluetooth split controller and the surface pro. It went terribly as the hardware really wasn't good enough to play the games but I've wanted this for that long: almost 9 years. I got a switch but the Nintendo brand of games just doesn't resonate with me (the kids love it, however) but they perfected the form, if not the power. Steamdeck has the correct amount of power for the screen res. It's a masterpiece

The only problem I have with the Nintendo switch is that it isn’t that powerful at all

Maybe docking it will be the thing that works for you. Take it somewhere and dock it with keyboard and mouse, plug into a monitor or TV and it become a more portable mid range PC.

Tried quite a few games now and it's either the scale / controls or graphics that get me.
I went into farming simulator 22 controls menu to see if I could memorise a few of the basics and honestly, there's page after page of 2 or 3 button combos that no ones ever going to remember.
Tried V Rising and the scales really off putting.
Tried Ride 4, which is a nice looking game on the desktop but the graphics are pinned back on deck which makes it look horrendous.
Everything I've loaded onto it has had one of these three issues.
I'll probably hang onto it to see if people start giving real world advice on what's practical to play and what's not but until then, I think it's going to end up on a shelf as a rather expensive book end.

I appreciate the suggestion but it's just not what I envisioned when purchasing.
Tucked up on the couch or in bed playing some of the stuff I had to sit at a desktop to play sounded really appealing. Portable but not exclusive(can listen/watch a bit telly while gaming on the couch) was a major plus point. Sounds a bit specific but it really was an appealing factor.
Suppose I'm just a bit disappointed that the reality didn't quite meet my expectations.

I know of someone in a Discord server who hates it. But it's just blind hate for everything Valve, and he would just try and come up with any lame excuse no matter how nonsensical it was. From it being "too big" to the shape of the battery, and that some random third party made a "purse" to carry it. So maybe that doesn't count. So maybe that doesn't count.

As others have said, it's not for everyone. If you don't like it, fine. Personally I use mine on my daily commute. It certainly wouldn't replace my desktop though.

I feel I should probably update on that prev post. I've just had another quick go of Farming Sim and noticed that when you hold down the top left trigger it displays a few button combo options that work with that input.
Seems they've put a bit of work into the game since SD announcement and it makes it a fair bit more playable than many of the others I've tried.
Only fair that I should mention.

Since you're using the deck in your house, why not just stream games from your desktop via steam? that would fix your issues with graphic fidelity and also increase battery life since you're not using your on-board gpu.

Controls are a lot to get used to for certain games, but it just takes a bit of time for muscle memory and mappinig out controls. There's a lot of experimental games I've installed on my deck, but if I just want to play some games without fiddling, I have a few titles that just work, like monster hunter rise and redout. Generally, action games that were already designed with consoles in mind work well out of the box. I feel like your issue with scale also has to do with the games you chose.

I hear even FPS games like doom are pretty good (haven't tested it out myself) and people made some good control setups for the deck/steam controller that you can download and use. Gyroscope can be hard to get used to, but it can feel natural after a bit, esp when in the setup, they're set to only work when holding down the left trigger (for aiming) or if you finger is sitting on the right analog stick (camera).

to each, their own...

the good news is that if you don't love it there are people who will give you more than you invested so that they can love it!

Tbh, I only clicked on this thread because I thought your avatar was a bent over lady showing her butt cheeks. But since I'm here... Are you sure you're not depressed or maybe just need better games? You said even on your desktop, nothing besides Rimworld is "taking your fancy". Go ahead and put that Steam Deck on gumtree. You don't need it, you need to sort your life out. Breathe some fresh air, walk through the woods, something. Let me know when you put your Deck on sale, k buddy? Alright, wish you luck.

I probably should be depressed but I just don't have it in me to suffer from that condition.
Far too much i want to do and too little free time to do it(even tho I spend more time thinking of what I want to do than actually doing it)
Probably why the gaming has taken a back seat in the past 6 months.
As stated, I thought that the Steam Deck would fill the gap where Im absolutely burst after a day at work and can't be bothered sitting in front of a PC.
Unfortunately it's not quite as simple as that with control and screen size issues affecting so many of the games I own.
I intend giving the hooking up to the pc thing a go but it'll be something I'll try if, or when games like Rust are available on SD.
Not that bothered about Ride4 but it was one of the first I tried and I think it just planted a seed in my head regarding the device in general.
I'm persevering. Small doses of ten minutes here and there but it just isn't fun and I end up turning the thing back off.
All just too much effort for too little reward... Might motivate me to get back on the big screen mind you.

IMO, it just depends on your lifestyle.

I've been a LONG time gamer in various capacities. I no longer desire to sit alone in a room stuck behind a desk just to play a game. Done that for decades. Being able to veg out and play something where ever in or around my house is more desirable. If I didn't have my PC setup as a full racing sim rig, I would have no need for my use for a gaming PC now having the Steam Deck.

There is nothing wrong with preferring to play on standard gaming PC/laptop. It's just your own preference.

That's pretty much where I am atm regarding PC. I'd much rather be sitting in the living room.
Although I'm pretty sure if something big and meaty hits the marketplace, eg RUST 2(if only) or something similar then I'll be itching to cram some serious gaming time back into my week.
I just don't think it'll be on the SD, regardless of how well it runs.
