Steam Deck

Steam Deck

Slow charging with battery bank and phone charger
Is anyone else having issues with their steam deck say it's going to slow charge when you plug in a battery bank and a phone charging cord? I bought Ankler Slim model, which everyone says would charge your steam deck, and it says slow charging and doesn't charge the deck even at the main menu. The phone charger is supposed to go with the steam deck, but once again, got that same stupid warning about slow charging. I can't say for certain if the phone charger works specifically with the steam deck, but how can one cord work for it over other cords? It should all be the same cord basically with slight different build quality depending on the manufacturer. Is this a battery issue or is there really only specific ones that will charge when playing games/just hanging out in the menu. Currently, only the charger that came with the deck will charge it, but I'd like to be able to play this in bed with the deck being charged via a USB-C to USB-B cord as I have a USB-B plug in my bed. Don't know if this matters, but its the 512gb model. Can't find any other info on why it's not charging on the internet or youtube these past few days and did all the steps others have said for different battery problems with the deck.

About the cable - you must use USB-C to USB-C cable to have USB Power Delivery 3 charging. That's the only way to charge the deck quickly right now.

steam deck needs 45watts of power to charge and play at the same time. your battery bank and other charger dont meet that requirement

Damn, so would getting a USB-c to USB-c with an input switcher for usb-b work? My bed and couch both only have the USB-B ports and those would be good places to have my switch work instead of having a long extension cord and plugging the device into the wall everytime.

Well, that sucks. Unfortunately, the box didn't say what the wattage was and it says 20k mAh, which I keep hearing is what you need to charge the device.

why dont you just buy a usb-c extension cable? then it will reach where you need it to

In order to support faster charging you need to make sure the charging device (power supply, or battery, etc.) supports USB-C PD3.0 and has sufficient wattage, which should really be 45W or more considering the power supply that Valve ships with the Deck.

The deck needs to communicate with the charger via a connection that doesn't exist on regular USB-A. If you add USB-A ports into the mix, it won't work. Time to upgrade your bed and couch I guess.

Well, it's a tempurpedic bed and a movie theater chair. Won't be updating those for a long time, but it sucks there's no way to utilize those furniture to be able to play the deck on them without having a really long extension cable and the power source on me when I move between rooms. :( You said USB-A, does that include USB-B as well?

USB-B is what printers use, I doubt you actually mean USB-B. Also, I doubt your furniture supplies enough power anyways, since it's likely not multi-voltage.

I had a similar problem. The theater chairs we own (which have USB-A ports) cannot power the Deck. Since the chairs themselves need power, I ran a power strip with a long power line under my theater chairs (hidden). Then I plugged in an Anker charging device with a 6ft USB-C to USB-C cable. Ran that up to where I sit.

Thought we all use USB-B and USB-A was for something else. You could be right on the furniture and it's quite impossible to find out as both places just say it has USB ports, without giving more detail. Sucks as I didn't think this would be an issue as I'd rather just plug it into a usb instead of carrying around the cord or even getting a longer cord online to be able to power the device. Although, I'm curious, are you saying a USB cord could power the device and it's just my current cord isn't rated for it?

USB-B is a "device" end cable type that is primarily used in printers and scanners. You're furniture almost certainly does not have USB-B unless it is an Up stream connection to a Hub of some sort on it.

the usb-c cables carry different wattages. they should be labeled (15 18 20 45 60 100 & 240 watts respectively) & Power Delivery 3.1 for proper charging. The same for any third party charger you plug the cable into. The charger that ships w the deck is 45 watts, but you can go down to 30watts without the slow charging message, (I've done this without any issues & the deck runs cooler too. But if you're running the deck with accessories (mouse k-board etc) then use the 45watt or higher rated cables/adapters.

So I’m using an Apple 87w usb-c charger with usb-c to usb-c cable and getting the same slow charger error.

Update: I just switched from using the Apple extension cable for the block to the standard duckhead that comes with the brick and no longer getting the warning. Very interesting.
