Warranty ? Fragility . Can it be extended?
Ehrm some users complain that their SD can stop working for no reason. What warranty do we get with this? Is it standard 12 months and can we buy device protection plan or extension on a warranty like with Dell products?

Oh my, these are bad news. I will start using my SD more. If it survives 1 year it means I have got a gooden.

You should feel lucky as my deck didn’t survive 2 weeks and the power button decided it no longer wanted to be part of the team lmao

OMG thats sucks man. Thats really bad. I am so invested in SD that if it broke I would be mad. I bought SD card, power bank, charger, cable and bunch of games.

This item is a fragile crap - just read here and reddit.

AAA put so much stress on this machine, I beleive to think it's made for indies.

But even for indies, my left stick used a lot for moving...
it's very weak, I feel it already starts to be gummy.

So imo, after 1 month I can say this gadget is super cool but will be out of order soon.

Wow. I am using mine mainly for playing indie games.
I am honestly scared to touch it now. What about games like Hades where you need to quickly react to whats going on screen?

Don't let him fear monger you. You shouldn't have to worry about breakage as long as you take care of it like and other electronic device.

Sounds like a lot of misinformation on this thread. There will always be defective models when something popular like the SD is rolled out to the masses. I am putting mine through its paces right now with AAA titles such as Cyberpunk which require maximum power draw so we will see how long it’ll last. I expect that this Deck will be fine for 3+ years of regular use… even my little Switch Lite which I have been using for almost 3 years & has far more fragile components such as the joy-cons is still working perfectly well.

This is nothing fragile feeling about the SD, it feels solid and robust to me!

A lot of the problems people are reporting are likely software and compatibility issues with the proton layer along with a janky SteamOS. Everything should be ironed out within a year, imo.

Did you buy with a credit card? Usually you’ll have an extra years warranty through them (your creditor/bank). I got my jet tub motor replaced this way a while ago.

Understand the principle of selection bias.

The only people posting on the forums are usually people complaining about an issue. People with no issues are not going to post that they have no issues, usually.

There have been hundreds of thousands (millions?) of steam decks sent out, and maybe a few hundred posts about people having issues.

Just as likely that those few hundred posts are the exception.
Vast majority are just as likely to go straight for the RMA.
I mean, judging by the quality of replies to questions like..
"my steam deck won't switch on"

Reply..
"have you tried charging the battery for a couple of hours?"

It'd hardly be a surprise to anyone that most wouldn't even bother asking on here.

"Hundreds of thousands or even millions" Where'd you get those numbers btw?

How dare people try basic troubleshooting before telling them to RMA it.

You're right, if it even has the SLIGHTEST issue, just RMA it. This device should be 100% flawless out of the box.

That's ridiculous advice. Not basic.

What next?

"I think my screens dead"

... "have you tried taking the steam deck out of the case?. You might just not be able to see it"

Ludicrous.

It is obvious to me that you never worked in tech support in your in entire life so you have no idea what you are talking about. So no it is not ridiculous or advice it is what any normal technical support person would do. They have a script that they follow. So it is not ludicrous either.

There is a reason "Have you turned it off and on again?" is a meme. It is not ridiculous in the slightest when an average consumer says that a battery operated device is no longer powering on to ask them if they have tried fully charging it. That sounds like a pretty logical first step if they haven't.

However, I wouldn't expect someone who can't grasp selection bias to have the critical thinking skill to understand how to troubleshoot anything.
