512gb model, defective joystick, tried to RMA, told to live with it.
I provided support videos and photos, the left stick is either defective or not installed correctly, the stick rubs against the side of the joystick housing/cowling and literally wears itsself to into the side making plastic dust everywhere.

Beyond the plastic dust games don't view the the stick as being push forward completely as it hits the side wall before it can complete its full function of movement, so I've started to use an external controller to play.

I just do not understand how that's something you should just keep using when you drop $650 for the most expensive console on the market right now.

Guess I'm being unreasonable just expecting the buttons to work. :steamfacepalm:

Probably not the answer you want, but you can adjust the radius at which the joystick recognizes a full movement. Based on the information you have given, that should solve the problem of having to use an external controller.

Take a toothpick or something firm, and you can get rid of the residue on the joystick. I had it on mine and after rubbing it off, it hasn't come back.

Still the issue of all the plastic dust created by the stick rubbing against the housing. I can't imagine that's going to do any good for the insides.

I don't think it will let me link a photo, but worth a try..

Come to think of it, my left Thumbstick does that a little just at the 11 PM to 1AM position. It gets better if I remove the debris (from both sides), and it gets worse if I don't. I suspect this is a matter of poor surface polishing of one or both parts on that side, which creates friction. It's possible it could be remedied with some extremely fine-grit sandpaper and some TLC, but you'd have to disassemble the Deck.

I'm not going to futz with mine as I'm hoping for an RMA for a different issue... but since they're telling you to live with yours, it might be worth a shot!

Have you already booted into desktop mode and tried running the calibration tool to recalibrate it?

From the picture and description, it looks like it might just be from pressing harder "up" because it's not properly registering the movement in game.

Here is a video The Phawx did replacing the original sticks with some Hall effect based ones. In that process he goes through the recalibration process. He also shows the controller test side of it to check what the range of movement is for the sticks. If yours isn't reaching the top of the circle in that then definitely try recalibration.

If you do go through recalibration and it is still not registering the full range at the top of the left stick then I'd document that and follow up with Valve again to get it RMA'd

It’s not even a console it’s a Nintendo switch like PC

Let me guess. Support told you that plastic dust and quickly wearing down front plate are within specification/tolerances, just like the headache inducing delta fan.

Valve. Good quality. Great support.

You must it it RMA’d as this workmanship is unacceptable for a new console. Tell them that the unit is now defective and ensure you get a replacement.

It’s unacceptable that valve shipped you a deck in that state, wow.

It can literally be fixed by cleaning the thimbstick. I did it on mine and it works fine.

I literally cleaned it. It's not gunk on the stick, the stick is not positioned correctly and wears against the wall.

Mine did too. It got gunk on it because of it. Cleaned it, now it's perfectly fine.

I believe you. I think it’s some kind of industrial gunk. I can’t see plastics shaving like that, it just isn’t something that I believe can happen.

To the OP - clean off all the gunk, continue using your SD for another week or two and I think your problem will go away.

I've never in all my years of owning consoles/PCs come across anything(even the cheapest of keyboard or mouse) like that.
It's extremely poor manufacturing standards and does make me wonder what state the internals of the average unit are in.

Who the hell were they employing to achieve such appalling standards?

You act like they sent out something that catches fire. It's a minor cosmetic issue.
