Steam Deck

Steam Deck

Is it safe to clean with compressed air?
Is it safe to clean the steam deck with compressed air by just blowing through the ports?
Currently live in a pretty dusty place with it and wondering how I should go about anti dust maintenance.

Unknown, but you can probably get a room air purifier for cheap so that not only do you not clock your Deck, but you might also keep your lungs free of that stuff too.
Also once they started adding that bad tasting chemical to compressed air I had to stop taking hits. (Just kidding about the hits). But I do worry that its a dense cloud/liquid that you're spraying on electronic components and not pure air. Check it out by testing on a piece of paper/cardboard. Its not going to stay dry. I don't see how thats not harmful to computer parts.
Use your own breath or hold a fast(but small) desk fan pointed at the inside of your case. Or if you have one of those keyboard cleaner/blowers that works too(no humidity).

blowing into the fan from the top would basically scatter the dust inside. best to actually open up the back cover for cleaning...

This is actually quite interesting. Will there be dust build up during normal use. Do you need to open deck every month to ehrm durst it?

I'd imagine it depends on circumstances and dustiness of the air. But the fan definitely seems to be "blowable" only from inside, since the air inlet is far away and is angled flat to the case, instead of looking directly at the fan like the outlet.

Get a huge gas powered compressor and let her rip right inside sensitive electronics.

I just use my camera cleaning kit from my DSLR. It comes with a handy blower to get in the awkward places. It can be used to suck dust and foreign objects out also, like a pipette. Standalone kits are available online for cheap enough.

I generally use compressed gas for my tower as its more roomy and less chance of moisture being held on or behind parts. I hesitate to use it on the steam deck with it not being open plan like a tower.

Edited this rather than make a new post:

If i did use compressed air id treat it like a soaked through phone, except a phone i would leave for 24hrs.

Turn off the steam deck completely. wrap it heavily in a dry towel. Place on a moderate and constant 30C (86f) radiator for 2-3hrs.

Better safe than sorry.

I did that once. Works great but you risk melting your parts. Its effective though.
