[need technical help] Nexus mods on steam deck?
Would prefer to use vortex over mod organizer 2 but I will be happy with whatever would be the most stable
I want to mod CDPR and Bethesda games.

I need written instructions(not a video guide) on how to get a mod manger working on the deck I am fluent in linux but I’ve never used wine or proton so I have no idea what I am doing at this point and I am finding a lot of conflicting information especially with older videos.

Install MO2: https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimmods/comments/uroneo/fyi_rejoice_the_fallout_skyrim_mod_manager_mod

Not positive on vortex.

I've got a modded SkyrimSE on my deck, I did it by installing mods on win10 desktop then transferring all the files over. Guide I used: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/te8pb6/pro_tip_modding_skyrim_on_linux_or_deck_is_easy

I haven't modded an CDPR games so I can't help much there but I imagine its similar.

Good luck

there isnt a general solution:
some games for windows have mod managers made for linux, or tools and guides to run them, but not all.

the fastest approach to find out if theres a way to mod a game you like, is to use youtube or a search engine to check if someone else has done it and shared a guide (ie "mods -name of game- linux").

mods that need an exe file or special drivers to run may not work, or may need special configurations to be installed. i have never tried to use mods for windows in linux, but afaik most mods that work directly (without a "injector" or manager) should work, as long as you install them in the right folders (inside the proton-wine path for the game).

I've found this to work fairly well for the Bethesda games I tried it on at least: https://github.com/rockerbacon/modorganizer2-linux-installer

Main downside is that I couldn't get the automatic downloads to work. So had to download things manually then load them up. Not a massive problem but just one you might run into. I didn't care enough to try and fix it.

It also runs incredibly slowly and locks up adding, enabling or moving mods around. But it works.

You could also do your mod installation manually. I don't have a ton of experience modding a lot of different games, but I spent a lot of time modding Morrowind. And it seemed like the consensus from modders was to manually install them for the best results.

And after starting out by using a mod manager and then switching over to manual installation, I had much better results and fewer issues when I read the mod instructions and installed it manually.

Of course, manual installation does take more time, but you don't have to worry about trying to get the mod manager to work either.

Just a thought.

I’ve been over doing manual installs for a long time and I’ve never had a problem with nmm or vortex that I couldn’t fix with LOOT. Manual installs are also annoying when pressed for time. Trying to get a FO4 mod pack ready for a road trip in 48 hours. Trying to setup something super light rn with some performance enhancements too to balance performance with all the new content I am going to install.

Best part about mod managers is that I don’t have to read the instructions and if I do it will throw an error on the offending mod and then I will read them after it’s installed the 35 or so mods that didnt need any instructions
