Asking for a friend ;) and yes im serious
I am struggling to find *any* reason at all to play in game mode when docked. On many games I have tried the mouse is unsusable. A few the keyboard wont work in certain menus. Some popup dialog boxes fail to show.
Only up-sides I can find: You have quick access to controller configuration and button access to steam friends etc.
...but game mode only displays on one monitor. If you play in desktop mode, your deck's monitor is on and can be used for your friends list or whatever. A lot of times, I have videos playing down there while I play. I'm starting to think of Game Mode as more like "Portable Mode".
i have had no problems with the mouse setup either. although i do not have a dock currently so i am not sure if thats a directly a docked issue or not.
is there a way to use a logi mouse without the usb block?
I have a 4K 144hz ASUS ROG Strix XG27UQ, that I might use as well as a Sony 4K XBR75Z9F, both of which currently have my desktop plugged into them, making it doubtful that the Steam Deck will be plugged into those, except for testing purposes.
4K isn't a real requirement for my Deck, as currently I think it just wouldn't support playable framerates. Though, I am one who normally buys the latest in technology simply because I may not need it today, but I likely will tomorrow, trying to minimize repurchasing things when I can. So, if 4K 60 is the latest available, that is likely what I will normally buy, because my wife's tablet supports that resolution, among other devices in the house.
That Wavlink is a really interesting looking device, it is loaded with ports and slots, has it given you any issues to this point, does everything work like you'd hope/expect? I wonder if you formatted and installed games onto a micro sd card plugged into your Deck, if it could them be read plugged into the slot on your dock. I ask this, because using a USB SSD requires a lot of extra steps in order to get it recognized as a Steam Library drive, steps that aren't obvious to a newb like myself. I did find a video where the guy explains how to do it, step by step, but I haven't gotten around to that yet. I am still trying to get OpenRazer working on my Deck at the moment. If those SD card slots on your dock can be used, I very well may go grab one now.
That is a very interesting idea, have you tested dual monitors in extended mode? If that works, that would be a really useful setup. I currently have Age of Empires 3 DE, Ancestors Legacy, Battle Brothers, Desperados 3, Dungeons 3, Gears Tactics, Halo Wars DE, Jurassic World Evolution 1 and 2, Planet Zoo, Sudden Strike 4, Tropico 6, Dawn of War 1 and 2 and all expansions, War for the Overworld, and Warhammer Gladius all curently installed, and have played all of them with my keyboard and mouse (except Battle Brothers, which I forgot was installed until I just noticed it for this list, but will be testing it as soon as I post this). A couple of them, such as Sudden Strike 4 and a couple of others, seemed to experience a little latency in the mouse, in game mode, but the mouse still works.
What kind of mouse issues are you having, does it simply not work at all, or is there latency, jerkiness, or something similar? One of my biggest issues with using the mouse in gaming made, is the scroll wheel almost seems to do about 1/4 of a line with each click, it takes forever to scroll through the Steam menus, but it seems to work ok while in-game.
I do not know how you would use a mouse without a USB hub, unless you could fine either a bluetooth mouse, or a USB C dongle. I don't think the Logitech G903 I have has Bluetooth capability. My Corsair K63 keyboard does, however, and when connected with Bluetooth I experienced some serious latency when using it in game, but that cleared up when I switched back to the dongle.
iirc, the SD slots on the dock share a drive assignment, so are either/or and not both at the same time. That's not a big deal. I have put my game libraries on multiple SD cards and also have a bootable Windows SD card ...but those are all from the Deck's slot, I have only accessed files from the Wavlink's SD. I will do some more tinkering later and let you know more if I can.
...I have not tried the VGA out either.
I just tested Battle Brothers in Game Mode, and the KB/M both worked just fine. But, you made a very valid point, why would I do that, and I do not have a good reason for doing so. I just had been. When I can switch to 1080P in games that can run at that resolution while in desktop mode, not to mention I can stop bouncing back and forth from game playing to desktop mode to surf the web. It really doesn't make sense to go to game mode at all. I can simply use it like a proper desktop, now I just need to scale the UI to make it a little more readable in desktop mode.
Please do let us know about using the SD slots for Deck memory cards, that would really be a big deal for me. I have an external card reader I can hook up and try, but I am not sure how fast it is. If we can access multiple SD cards simultaneously while docked could be a big deal.
It worked fine, but Steam would no longer allow me to use the card for my Library, so I removed my 1TB card, and moved the 512 from the reader to the Deck's SD card slot. From there I was able to add my Library. I decided to try moving a 21GB game from the internal HDD, and it began, but it was painfully slow. So, I am currently formatting the 512 card on my PC using the minitool Partition Wizard Free version (I used this on my 1TB card, and it works great, very fast). The slow speed I experienced during the copying had nothing to do with the external reader, since during that operation the card was plugged directly into the Deck. This card was not previously this slow, so I believe it may have to do with the Deck partitioning/formatting, since I have experienced this previously as well. I expect the 512 card to be slower than the 1TB, but not this much slower.
So, I will finish my testing once the formatting is done (likely about 2 hours). But what I have found is that a Micro SD Card is accessible when connected externally to the Deck, but it must be added to your Steam Library while plugged into the Deck Micro SD slot. Once we have tested, we will also have a better idea on the kind of speeds I might expect from doing this with the 512 card too.
No clue what kind of warlock nonsense is going on behind the scenes, but I'm guessing the dock is converting digital to analog, outputting that to the VGA cable, and the monitor is converting it back to digital. ...It works, and no issues when playing games, etc.
The UI scaling on steam windows doesn't work on the Linux client as far as I can tell, though I have never really dug. Tried on Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch with different desktop, environments/window managers. And now SteamOS. I think back to Windows and how some older programs just look fuzzy and magnified. I guess that's a workaround that Linux doesn't do, though there may be something out there on github.

i have a OTG Cable that came with one of my older phones, while its better then nothing when it comes to mouse use while on desktop, i was able to re-bind my track pad and triggers to act more like the steam controller on desktop.
also no issues when in gaming mode for games that require mouse inputs
