Steam Deck

Steam Deck

Is there an option to download games while in sleep mode?
I got my steam deck yesterday and I wanted to download monster hunter on it while I went to sleep for the night. I put it on sleep mode and it continued back on where it started when I checked on it a few minutes ago. Is there something for it to download in the settings?

No but it is something Valve is aware of and some change to how the sleep function works when docked and a download is running will likely be implemented in the future.

Got a source to read up on that? With a source, that would be huge!

Hmm. Does the copy paste method from a drive still work on it? I've done before when transferring games from laptop to desktop. That one involves copying the game folders and app manifest file. This is my first time using linux so im unsure how it works

I'd have to go dig though the features posts they've done. IIRC they addressed it when discussing the SteamOS3.2 update when partially adding a workaround by adding in the controls to sleep the display independently from the system so you could leave it powered on while docked and have the display go to sleep after a period of time.

There are over two pages of threads in the feature requests relating to this feature.

Ah, cool! With the lead "Valve's features posts", I can do the digging myself, thank you :p2chell:

I saw on a pre-release IGN interview they discussed download functionality in sleep mode and said it would come later.

Why isn’t it possible? The Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, mobile phones, etc… are all able to download while in sleep mode. This is a basic functionality that should be available to PC users as not everyone has 100mb/sec internet and some leave their systems on overnight.

the consoles literally have a second co-processor for this functionality. And your phone never enters sleep like a computer - sleep literally turns off the processor on a PC. That's how you can have such low battery usage while sleeping.

Thanks for the explanation. Valve said they were working on it though so there should be a way. I would expect modern systems to have this functionality on both Windows and Linux… it is a great feature to have especially now the handheld PC market is beginning to grow.

I believe their promise is more "turn the screen off and limit power/install speed to keep fan off than actual download in sleep.

Fair enough… that’s basically a faux functionality in sleep mode then. Not exactly great but better than nothing. It’ll definitely be required if they release a future OLED model as burn in could occur if users leave their SDs on all night downloading massive games like GTAV and RDR2.

Actually I just dug through most of them and didn't see it. It might have been in one of the post launch interviews they did. If I find it I'll post back.
