Traveling with Steam Deck -Network Login Issue
Currently traveling with my Steam Deck . Hotel wifi login pops up a browser dialog box asking for Last Name and room number. The deck in game mode displays the dialog box but reloads it every 5 seconds as in a loop. Even if I try to type something into an input field on the web form. Other devices such as iPad handle it normally. Restart of deck does not correct . I put the deck into desktop mode and set default browser to Google Chrome (which I had installed before leaving home). In desktop mode using Chrome, the dialog box displays normally. However now I can’t get the virtual keyboard to pop up and I don’t have an external keyboard. So I still can’t get logged into hotel wifi . Been here 10 days ….

Steam button + X doesn't pop up the keyboard?

No - the steam button doesn’t appear to be functional in desktop mode . So I can’t get the virtual keyboard to pop up … :(

FWIW, I just went to desktop mode and was able to bring up the keyboard with either Chrome or Mozilla launched.

Good to know. Thanks . Will look into why it’s not happening on my unit …

Tried it again and confirmed . In desktop mode on my deck, the virtual mouse works as expected (movement using thumb pads and double click using R1 works) . Steam button seems to not function at all. Seems like i am in touchscreen mode all the time . No virtual keyboard …. :(

Well as a work around, there is a package in the Discover store called CoreKeyboard. It's in the category Accessibility.

In desktop-mode the Steam application must be running in the background!!

As an alternative, you could buy a portable WiFi router. I have one the size of a hockey puck with a single Ethernet port that can be configured as either LAN or WAN. If your room doesn’t have Ethernet, you can use your phone or laptop to set it up as a WiFi extender.

I got mine in order to use my Roku at hotels. Roku eventually created a workaround, but last time I needed it I couldn’t get it to work and had to resort to setting up the router anyway. I’ll never travel without it again.

Yes . Works fine in game mode . I do use a keyboard style named Night Shift.

Thanks guys . I tried to start The Steam app in Desktop mode and it popped up an error that it couldn’t connect to the steam servers . Once I clicked the option to startup in offline mode. Whaalaa the virtual keyboard works and I can use Google chrome to get logged on to Wi-Fi. Thanks for the tips that The Steam App needs to be running when in desktop mode. I’m good to go now . Thanks everyone 👍…. I appreciate the help.

The steam keyboard won't open if you are not connected to the internet but to login to the wifi you have to type. I've been stuck in this ♥♥♥♥ loop before and had to log into the wifi login with Hotspot, type it in but not submit, switch back to hotel wifi then send.

I also had this issue when I purchased my steam deck a few months ago but managed to find a work around when it came to logging in. I have completely forgot how I did it and I am now kicking myself. If anyone finds a way to log in without going into desktop mode and installing Chrome that would be great thanks.

If the hotel/location requires input to a HTML form to get access to their wifi, there is no other way around it other than using your phone as a hotspot.
