Can you install virtualbox to the Steam Deck/SteamOS ? (virtual windows 10)
I am not talking about dual boot option, I am talking about creating a virtual machine inside the SteamOS. Is it possible? I know VirtualBox does this kind of thing for example, but I don't know if SteamOS is runinng it well since its Linux based and I am not familiar with linux at all.

You might be able to use nix [nixos.org] to install virtualbox. I would try that first. If not, you are going to have to disable readonly mode.

yea I saw videos when they wiped out SteamOS and installed Windows instead but still games were running worse than with Steamos I am just worried about the everyday apps that are windows only this is why I need windows but for games steamos is great

Nah, don't do that. You can use bottles to run windows software. Anything that doesn't run there is a linux replacement for.

Yeah there's like several drivers missing on the steam deck and the Apu drivers are out of date. Valve needs to amp up Windows support. It's getting really annoying. I hate Linux so much now thanks to Valve. If they don't get Windows fully working I'm over this company. I'll never give them another red cent. I'll find other game stores to buy from.

i dont see why running vbox wont work, seen people run LD-player to run android and thats roughly the same deal. however i've had some issues with windows apps not running and had more success with proton-GE. just install ProtonUp-Qt through discover, run through the protonup wizard/tool thing, set your apps compatability to use the newest proton-GE and try again perhaps?

since the operating system controls the hardware itself, I am starting to think Valve designed Steam Deck to operate best with SteamOS, and not with Windows. I don't have problem with that, just if you emulate windows for games there should be an emulation for windows applications as well

Proton / Wine isn't emulation. They are a translation layer that translates Windows API calls to POSIX compliant system calls for Linux.

As noted, you can use bottles to run a large amount of Windows applications.

Virtualbox needs kernel modules to work properly and that won't happen with flatpaks. Gnome Boxes work fine however you won't be able to pass USB devices to the VM (though you might not need such functionality)
