Problem with reimage SteamOS on Steam Deck
Hello !

So i got 64 gb version of Steam Deck i installed new 256 gb m2 and stuck on reimage for 3 days now .

I am using Rufus to make image and i even tried like 10 versions of it in case some might run into problems.

I have tried all image versions 2 3 and 4.

I have tried 3 USB sticks with 2 hubs and i even ordered pure USB C brand new 150/100 speed USB stick.

Whatever i try its always stuck on Steam Logo and never goes further....

Checked the forums and reddit and tried all possible methods to make it work but it doesnt :/

I even left it overnight incase but nothing moved forward.

SSD is working fine i tested it multiple times and it shows in BIOS too .

I am really hopeless at this point .... It should have been alot easier then it is ....

Anyone got similar problem or might have an idea for solution ?

Thanks in advance

@OP you'll need to ensure the flashdrive is created for UEFI. Then press and hold the "Vol -" button down and then press the power button to boot to the bootmanager.

When it boots to the bootmanager then you'll select the flash drive to boot from that which should look like the Desktop mode. Once it loads you'll see a couple options on the desktop and you will want to select the "Reimage Steam Deck" and double click it to start the process. It will then reboot and complete the reimage which will take a little while to complete. Just leave it plugged in and wait for it to finish. Once it is done it will reboot to the setup process again.

Did you ensure it was set as UEFI in rufus? because you didn't say anything about what steps you actually did and just said you used rufus 10 times.

Have you tried asking valve directly just to see what they say.
By creating a support ticket if you can't get it solved.

Yes it was after you Select Image in Rufus you cant actually change anything or click anything as all is blurred.

When is it getting stuck on the Steam logo? when you are trying to boot to the UFD or when you are trying to start the "Re-image Steam Deck" from the recovery environment?

Also, for clarity is this what your rufus looked like when you created the UFD?

I just re-tested it with this

  1. Downloaded Steam Deck Recovery Image 4
  2. Downloaded and Installed Rufus 3.20.1929
  3. Connected UFD to a USB-A 3.0 port on my motherboard rear IO
  4. Selected the UFD in the "Device" drop down selection list in Rufus
  5. Selected "Disk or ISO image (please select)" in the "Boot selection" drop down selection list
  6. Clicked the "Select" button and selected the "steamdeck-recovery-4.img.bz2" compressed image file
  7. Noted the "Target system" was set as UEFI (non CSM)
  8. Selected "Start" to begin writing the image to the UFD
  9. Accepted the warning that this will destroy all data on the UFD
  10. Waited for about 15 minutes for the image to complete writing to the UFD and the "Cancel" button changed to "Close"
  11. Selected "Close" and then exited Rufus
  12. Ejected the UFD using Windows explorer
  13. Shutdown the Steam Deck from the Steam Menu > Power > Shutdown
  14. Connected the UFD to the USB-A to USB-C adapter and inserted it to the Steam Deck's USB-C port
  15. Pressed and held "Vol -" button and pressed the power button
  16. Released "Vol -" button after boot chime and waited for the boot manager to load
  17. Selected the "EFI USB Device (KingstonDataTraveler 2.0)" boot option
  18. Waited at Steam Deck logo while the image was decompressed and booted to the Recovery Environment. This took about 10 minutes to change from the Steam Deck logo to where the mouse cursor showed up on the blank screen, and then another minute or so to finish loading the desktop

As the Steam Deck Recovery Image is a bz2 compressed image file I also tested uncompressing the image file before creating the Steam Deck Recovery UFD via Rufus to see if this would make booting to the recovery environment faster since it would not need to decompress during EFI boot time.

For this I installed WinZip trial. Uncompressed the "steamdeck-recovery-4.img.bz2" to my documents folder which yeilded the "steamdeck-recovery-4.img" image file.

I then repeated the above except choosing the uncompressed "steamdeck-recovery-4.img" file instead of the compressed "steamdeck-recovery-4.img.bz2" file.

The uncompressed recovery UFD took about 4 - 5 minutes to boot to the cursor and then about a minute to finish loading the desktop.

EDIT:
Also of note, what size UFDs are you using? I'd recommend using a 16GB or 32GB such as the one I linked above.

Everything exacly as you stated i even have same Pendrive and Screen is same..... Its stuck right at begin when i select bootable device then the logo appears and nothing happens . Per like 20 tries i once get to black screen and cursor up but then nothing after that .

I even tested the m2 i put in Steam deck and same pendrive with SteamOS i made and installed it on laptop and all working so something definately wrong on Steam Deck .

The deck was 1 days old after i swapped M2 so also no way its invalid.

So conclusion is everything is working but Steam OS install doesnt work.

In the future, use etcher.io even on Windows. I have no idea why they told us to use Rufus. Rufus is broken. It's the program not the os. Rufus likes to break efi partitions sometimes and I've found etcher.io to just be better.

Here's the solution I found when I experienced the same issue of the installation getting stuck on the Steam logo for ages, then on the mouse with black screen state for ages:

0. Reformat USB stick to xFat using Disks app on Linux (Partition manager on Windows)
1. Download the steam image
2. On Linux (Fedora) extract the .bz2 so that it's just a .img
3. Using Balena Etcher, i flashed the .img to my USB stick
4. I inserted the USB stick into a USB-A to USB-C adaptor and held down "-" and pressed the power button on the Deck and then let go
5. Chose "EFI USB Device" with "A" button (the only option for boot device)
6. Got the usual stuck on Logo. Waited 3m50s which got me to wrong way round mouse
7. Waited 4m25s until the mouse was the right way round
8. Waited 10mins and the start of the GUI appeared
9. Waited 2m49s more for the GUI to fully load
10. Selected Re-image Steam Deck with double press of R2
11. That took a few minutes, then I chose the Proceed button, the Deck restarted and I pulled out the USB stick.
12. The Deck was stuck not booting
13. I manually held down the power button for 5+ seconds to power off
14. I pressed the volume down and power button and saw that the SteamOS was now an option to boot from, which i did
15. Chose language and connected to WiFi
16. It installed an update
17. It got stuck on "Starting Steam Deck update download" so I held down the power button until it powered off.
18. After 10 seconds I powered on the Deck, and waited with the Steam logo on screen for about a minute
19. It says "Update complete, launching Steam" with a grey horizontal line. And then booted to setup again
20. Then I got the sign in screen and all sorted.

Hope this helps anyone who's having issues.

I had a very similar problem a couple days ago. Steam support eventually helped me get it working again. The steam image had to be booted through the boot menu (hold volume+ and steam and …), but putting the battery into storage mode is what ended up fixing stuck on boot for me.
