Steam Deck

Steam Deck

I installed the epic games store on my steam deck. Dont rip me a new one ok?
Wanted to share my experience (experiment) of trying to play epic games on the steam deck. I'm on the computer for way too long every day due to my job. At the end of the day I want to play video games but i want to get away from the computer. so i bought the steam deck portable. I thought hmm this will allow me to play PC games without purchasing a PC (i'm an apple computer kind of person). Yes i'm aware that not all games work on the steam deck. I watched some tutorials and painstakingly figured out how to install epic games on the steam deck. Some of the games work. Some of them don't. (shocker). Just to name a few that i've had problems with: Paradigm, Blair Witch Project. HOWEVER i've been able to play Ghostbusters and Just Die Already!!!!

I put a 100gb (I think) microsd card into the steam deck. So if you try to install games from the steam store, it recognizes the card. But if you launch the epic games platform through steam, and then try to install games while you're in epic, it says you don't have enough space and it doesn't seem to recognize the microsd card.

When you're in the epic games library (on steam deck) the physical jog wheels on your steam deck dont allow you to scroll up and down to see your games in the epic games library. The physical up and down buttons on the steam deck dont work either when you're trying to scroll up and down to peruse your epic games library. You have to take your finger and physically click that on-screen scroll line to get up and down and even that is super clunky. Maybe i'll add more to this review later but wanted to share my experience.

You can use Heroic Games Launcher for Epic games on Linux. It's in the Discover Store.

i'm not familiar with the discover store. is that native to steam deck? What is your experience with the heroic games launcher? do you find its less buggy then my experience described above?

Its native. The same app which does all the updates. I run Epic from Lutris but Heroic should work too. I added the Epic game store as a non Steam app to Steam so I can start it from game mode too.

SteamOS native, i.e. Discover via Desktop mode.

You need to switch over to desktop mode on the Steam Deck then launch it from the "start menu" and not Steam (forgot the correct name, sorry, so I just call it "start menu"). Discover is a native Linux app that is bundled with Steam OS in desktop mode and serves a similar role as the Windows Store on Windows (except it's far more open and not something people avoids). It's not developed for the Steam Deck, mind you, it's just included and lets you install normal, native Linux apps.

It's not on the Steam store. It is on the application store called Discover which is part of desktop mode.

i also feared the ripping of a new one. had to take out a life insurance policy the moment i installed windows on the Deck.

You can do everything with your deck you want. Just don't push your preferences onto others as they are free to run what they want.

Type "heroic" on the Discover Store in Desktop mode and wait until the store finishes searching. It may take some time. You just hit install and laucnh the app from the start menu.

i followed a youtube tutorial that showed me how to install it. now that its installed on the steam store, i launched it, then i went and hit install again on lawnmower simulator. it gave me some warning about not having the right wine so i clicked install on the prompt it gave me. now it says "Failed to initialize player. Details: failed to initialize graphics. make sure you have DirectX 11 installed. have up to date drivers for your graphics card and have not disabled 3d acceleration in display settings. InitializeEngineGraphics failed"

don't worry, i won't go off on you for using epic (this time ;) But I have heard that the functionality of other game stores requires some tinkering to make work, and it can be a less than stellar experience.

That said, is it ok if I ring a little bell and say "Shame"? ;D

Are you using Proton or Wine? It's in Advanced Settings.

Heroic is not the way if you want save sync to work. While they do support cloud saves it's been unreliable for me.
