If you'll be using it with Window PCs & the Steam Deck, you should be able to format on Windows as NTFS like normal (or so I've heard)

If to be used exclusively with the Steam Deck *only*, you it would need to be formatted as EXT4 *and* using the switch '-O casefold' so it can deal with stupid Windows mixed upper & lowercased filenames.

If you search these Forums for 'casefold' you should find a couple. Same for sharing drives between WIndows and Steam OS on the Deck.

You would need to use GParted, Gnome DIsk Utility (aka "Disks"), or KDE Partition Manager. There are more options, but those 3 have a gui, so its more easy to find which options are available. I ignore if steam deck includes more than one, but i think its very likely that the kde partition manager is included.

As previously commented, you would need to use "Ext4" format in the partition you want to use for the library. can be the whole disk if you like, but you could also make another partition for other files if you want to use it also under windows; windows is unable to read or write into ext4 partitions without special tools, but in linux you can write and read most formats in existence, so having a partition in a format that windows and linux are both able to read-write can help you to share files between systems.

also notice that doesnt work properly for sharing a library made in linux, with a steam client running under windows, because the paths are different.

why would you use casefold with Linux? makes no sense.
