Steam Deck
Steam Deck won't boot up properly; Black Screen
So my Steam Deck won't fully boot up now. I hear the chime, see the power light up when I push the power button and the touchpads have haptic feedback. The fans also spin up but the screen remains turned off. I've tried multiple things; volume up with power on, volume down with power on, holding power button down 15s and press again, depleted battery all the way down, charged all night, run with charger connected, opened it up, disconnected and reconnected battery, connected to usbc hub to hdmi, created recovery flash driver to try and boot off of... none of this stuff works. If anyone has found some other method, please enlighten me. I'm afraid I might have to RMA my Steam Deck after only about a month of having it.

I love how everyone is thanking me for this, and don't get me wrong I AM appreciative of the gratitude, but let's be honest... I only provided a few steps that were given to me by the Devs. If people wanna express REAL gratitude? Go buy a new Steam Deck game.

Here are the steps that I had to take in order to restore use of my Steam Deck.

I could not get the screen to turn back on after the Steam Deck's battery had died one time. I could feel the haptics response and I could hear the chime of the deck turning on, but nothing on the screen. The Volume button + the power button to get into the BIOS wouldn't work either. That's when I put in a ticket to the support site and nearly had to send it back. They replied with the following steps.

1. Make sure the unit is shut down by holding the power button for 10 seconds.
2. Check that the unit is off, there should be no haptic response when touching the trackpads and no fan noise.
3. Plug in the provided power supply into the unit, you should see a solid white LED.
4. Hold the "Volume +" button and the "..." button at the same time for 10 seconds. After 10 seconds while still holding the buttons, unplug the power supply.
5. When preformed correctly you should see the power LED blink 3 times and after that the unit should not respond to using the power button.
6. Next, plug the power supply back into your unit. This will exit storage mode.
7. Retest the issue.

At first these troubleshooting steps did not work...

When I got to step 3, even though I had noted that haptic feedback being turned off, the moment I plugged in the cable I would hear the chime and the haptics response would startup again. That's when I decided to hold the power button AGAIN, while moving tracing on the touchpad until the haptics response stopped. At which point, I proceeded forward as normal to using the Volume + and "..." buttons, and then BAM... Things worked!

Hope this helps others out there!

Thank you so much... Your post saved my steam deck twice!

So same thing just happened to me today, tried using this method didn't work until I kept holding volume + and "..." for a few more seconds past the first 3 blinks which then it blinked 2 more times. I connected the power cable and the display turned on.

I had the same problem. After SteamDeck battery dying completely I plugged in the cable, heard a short power on chime and the fans just spun up, screen didn't display anything.

This helped me... After I plugged in the cable it exited the battery storage mode and powered on normally! Thanks s o much :D

Your steps were the only one that helped me. Thank you 🙏:MissionAccomplished: I was dreading thinking I would have to RMA, which may be especially complicated in my case since I have an aftermarket 1TB SSD with dual boot.
I had same problem weird I held plus and minus and power button and screen came back on
You just saved me from a very dark place lol I also removed the cable with my teeth. Thank you so much!

I always wonder what people use to get the cable removed... I used my feet lol
Once you finally get it booted you'll be stuck with multi-gig shader pre chache downloads and if your in a remote are you're basically ♥♥♥♥♥♥

Valve decided to save important game files to RAM and when you restart you are ♥♥♥♥♥♥
Okay so I just had this exact issue, and the steps above with the unplugging of the cable with the teeth (lol) worked. But now I have ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ performance for some reason. The fan doesn't ramp up and I can't run anything above 10 fps... The answer above me mentions shader pre-cache but I didn't have any of that. I have fiber, everything is up to date... It's as if the Steam deck was severely undervolted or something like that.

Does anybody know how to fix this?
Im not really sure what to do next after step 5, the lights blink 2 or 3 times then I just plug it in and try to turn the power on but screen is still off, do I just wait until the system boots up?
any one has solustions when steam deck is booting you hear the fan touch pad is working but there is no picture on the display and no picture in doking mode
keep the device running with black screen, fans spinning. If it starts up after about 40 minutes it might be the following problem:
