Steam Deck
Steam Deck won't boot up properly; Black Screen
So my Steam Deck won't fully boot up now. I hear the chime, see the power light up when I push the power button and the touchpads have haptic feedback. The fans also spin up but the screen remains turned off. I've tried multiple things; volume up with power on, volume down with power on, holding power button down 15s and press again, depleted battery all the way down, charged all night, run with charger connected, opened it up, disconnected and reconnected battery, connected to usbc hub to hdmi, created recovery flash driver to try and boot off of... none of this stuff works. If anyone has found some other method, please enlighten me. I'm afraid I might have to RMA my Steam Deck after only about a month of having it.

Here are the steps that I had to take in order to restore use of my Steam Deck.

I could not get the screen to turn back on after the Steam Deck's battery had died one time. I could feel the haptics response and I could hear the chime of the deck turning on, but nothing on the screen. The Volume button + the power button to get into the BIOS wouldn't work either. That's when I put in a ticket to the support site and nearly had to send it back. They replied with the following steps.

1. Make sure the unit is shut down by holding the power button for 10 seconds.
2. Check that the unit is off, there should be no haptic response when touching the trackpads and no fan noise.
3. Plug in the provided power supply into the unit, you should see a solid white LED.
4. Hold the "Volume +" button and the "..." button at the same time for 10 seconds. After 10 seconds while still holding the buttons, unplug the power supply.
5. When preformed correctly you should see the power LED blink 3 times and after that the unit should not respond to using the power button.
6. Next, plug the power supply back into your unit. This will exit storage mode.
7. Retest the issue.

At first these troubleshooting steps did not work...

When I got to step 3, even though I had noted that haptic feedback being turned off, the moment I plugged in the cable I would hear the chime and the haptics response would startup again. That's when I decided to hold the power button AGAIN, while moving tracing on the touchpad until the haptics response stopped. At which point, I proceeded forward as normal to using the Volume + and "..." buttons, and then BAM... Things worked!

Hope this helps others out there!

When I try these steps, I'm unplugging the power cable while also pressing Vol+ and "..." but the power LED isn't blinking 3 times. When I plug the power cable back in I'm back to no display and fans running. Any other ideas? Waiting on Steam Support to respond..

That's because the steam deck starts when you plug it.

You should plug the steam deck, then shut it down.
Now you can press "+ & ..." for ten seconds and remove the cable.

I got the same issue and i fixed it by holding the power button for about 30 sec until the indicator light turns white. The deck wasn't plugged in (just in case)
Kudos to you, oddly this was the only solution that worked for me... but what does it do? lol

This is something I did not try when mine went to 45 minutes of black screen after the 3.4.2 update. I wound up RMAing it and the replacement is on its way. But I would have liked to try it!
Dang, same issue. I tried all the listed potential fixes here and no dice. Re-imaged, power cycled, Battery storage mode, USB-C reset. Contacting support for RMA.

Thank you so much! This now allows me to play my Deck while docked, however, as soon as I unplug the charger, the Deck now switches off immediately?

My issues started after I manually put the desk into Battery Storage Mode with the intention of replacing a rattling fan - https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/How+to+Enable+Battery+Storage+Mode/149962

However, I didn't actually have the correct screwdrivers to disassemble the Steam Deck, so no physical changes have been made to my Deck. Its almost like my Deck is still in Battery Storage Mode and I cant find anyway to turn this off..

EDIT: OK for seemingly no reason, the Deck now boots up without a charger plugged in, however, the GPU/CPU clock speeds are throttling themselves to 300MHZ making all games impossible...

try putting it in storage mode again or reimage SteamOS 3 to your deck

Omg I love you thank that work :)
I encountered the same problem. After updating to version 3.4.4, at first I held down the power button for 10 seconds and restarted several times and it still didn’t work. Later, I found that after waiting for 40 minutes, I would enter the steam os normally, including entering the recovery mode and the bios menu. Wait 40 minutes. I'll try storage mode when I get home, hope it works.
Hi my best friends.. I installed Windows system on my steam deck and now I changed my mind and want to make a recovery for steam OS:steamsad:
Anyone can please help
