Steamdeck won't boot after reimaging
I have a 256 GB version of steamdeck that I've been enjoying from past couple of weeks. I was playing Witcher 3 yesterday and out of no where everything slowed down. And then the game crashed. And nothing on the screen would move.

I held the power button for 5 seconds and force shutdown deck. And then when I tried booting it up, it was stuck on boot logo. And it stayed there for an hour.

After researching the issue the simplistic fix was to reimage the deck. So I followed the steam's official guide, reimaged it using the official image and now it is stuck at this console screen (tty5)
steamdeck login:

It isn't moving forward.

Does anyone know what can be done to revive it? Or is it warranty time?

Just wanna point out that if you try the re-imaging process, and get the point where just the steam deck logo is showing, don't get impatient, it took me a solid 5 minutes or more stuck on the logo before i turned around and saw a wheel moving. hopefully i can get it running again now

It fixed mine also, I really appreciate the tip, I’ve searched everywhere for a solution and this was the only one I found with this trick. Valve really needs to address this issue. Thanks again

Healers tip also worked for me. Multiple attempts to reimaging the deck didn't work but the battery storage mode worked instantly. For me, the problem occurred when i was playing elden ring on the deck without power supply. After i ran low (ca 20%) i plugged in the charger and everything became extremely slow. I rebooted and ran into the described problem, so there might be a connection to the power management/battery software of the deck
And oddly this also fixed mon USB-c monitor out issue and no audio over HDMI. THANK YOU FOR THIS!

Glaf it helped. 👍

for others hitting the same issues:

early threads on the Steam Deck discussions forum mentioned an USB reset procedure... I suspect this would be enough to fix USB-C monitor out and audio-over-HDMI issues faster

It looks like you're past grub and have booted the linux kernel and what's happened is that the graphics haven't started.

Can you enter your password and then try this command on the console:

steamos-session-select gamescope

and see if launches?

People are saying that he MOBO is bad but if it were I don't think it could get this far. Like you've booted linux from the NVME if you took out the re-imaging media after the restart.

Did you try re-imaging it again?

Power storage mode sloves the issue, thanks!

From this experience, this is what i have found:

1.) When the SD is low on battery, it'd start lagging. (FPS drops from 50s to less than 10 on "Lost Judgment")
2.) At this stage, even if you put it to sleep and start charging, it would still lags.
3.) Force a shutdown and wouldnt start up, stuck at SD logo or black screen (lit up)
4.) Restoration image works fine (only reinstall SteamOS), but when boot up, stuck at SD logo for long time, force shutdown and restart brings the "steamdeck login:" command prompt.
5.) Nothing else works from this point on until I put the SD in "Battery Storage Mode". Plug in the power outlet and all works fine.

I suspect I didn't even need to reinstall SteamOS, just put it in Battery Storage Mode and should did the magic.

Anyway, problem solved, thanks to this post and not the customer service.

Hope this helps anyone who's having the same issue.

I'm not sure this is working for me... I just got my steam deck and reimaged the os, changed the battery storage mode, and still the same problem persists:

It starts up, asks for language time zone etc, but no matter what internet I connect to, it gets to like 20% and stays there for 14+ hours. I check my internet connection and often times it's either kilobytes or zero while downloading. I have 8mbs internet and literally nothing.

Any help? I just want to play with my steam deck :(

@x21destro your case might be due to deck's wifi issues preventing it from finishing updates during the initial setup wizard...

can you try a cabled connection via usb ethernet dongle/dock to your router? that would ensure you circumvented this issue if that's the case, at least so you can reach the main UI

Enter bios on power on (power + Vol+) with power supplier disconnected.
Within the BIOS, use the D-Pad to navigate and the A button to select.
Navigate to Setup Utility.
Navigate to the Power menu.
Select Battery storage mode.
Select Yes to confirm.
Your Steam Deck should now power down into storage mode.

Also works for me too! I was about RMA tomorrow
