Steam Deck Longevity
I like my Deck but I feel like this is still something worth discussing, how long do you guys think the current Deck will be relevant? I'm more specifically asking about how long this thing will be able to play current games before an actual hardware upgrade would be needed to keep up with the times. I'm sure this will depend on the kind of game, but let's say the newest triple A releases

The newest triple A games also need to be playable on the current consoles. And in 30 years it will be a very nice retro device. Like the Amiga.

As with regular PCs, more graphically demanding games will need to have their settings lowered and upgrades will be necessary years down the line to keep up with more demanding games.

If it sells enough devs will target it as their lowest recommended specs.

No they won't. They will always target PC hardware. https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey

The Deck will show up on those reports because it's considered a PC by usage stats.

"SteamOS Holo" is reported in the hardware survey as 7.58% which is +2.35% (up from last month) of all linux users.

I don't think they will target it as their lowest specs, but the devs will likely have a "Steam Deck mode" that focuses on a good experience on the Deck while not sacrificing anything for those using traditional gaming appliances.

Game devs won't target a Linux device for recommended specs. They never will, at least if Windows will still be the #1 OS. There are even more MAC OS users than Linux users.

The whole reason the deck is a product though is because Valve is trying to reduce Windows market share in the gaming space.
They're rumoured to be working on a tv style consoleish pc as well that will run SteamOS and will further increase the amount of linux devices used for gaming. If they get to even 20% that will be a significant enough chunk that developers will have to keep the hardware in mind when developing.

Source?

Don't release the source to bottom feeders, it is a known fact that valve is moving to a gdp producing commercial company.

I liked it better when is was a small discount company for fellow geeks trying to get away from rip off consoles, a place where the boss was less concerned about profit margins.

Pretty soon, they gonna be standing outside universities and sending businesses people over seas to look for talent to make better games exclusive to this platform only.

Off topic useless statement here - There is still better free education and health care in the world.

Can I have whatever you're smoking?

Considering they've literally said they are almost selling the Deck at a loss.

Who are the bottom feeders? And what makes them bottom feeders?

Mat.W - your steam deck will always be relevant forever. Your steam deck can be repurposed to suit another use based on your creatively and the people who like to make open source software to extend the life of electronic products.

Be happy with your purchase.

Video games have been progressing rather slow for years now. Some of us have been using the same graphics card for 5 years or more without problems.
