There’s a power button & Volume Up/Down.
iPhone has one that just silences the ringer/notifications, all media is still audible, try it, I just did.

Almost all smartphones have volume up/down buttons & a power button, just like the Steam Deck.
It takes 2 seconds to mute the audio.

What are you listening to that needs Instant mute,

Mute function on a smartphone can be on the touchscreen touching the note under the volume tab...
It is call an equalizer so you don't mess up with your differents adjusted volumes all the time.
You have it as well on PC where you can mute every software/outputs separatly... which can be handy too on Deck.

Couldnt this be solved pretty easily - are combo-binds possible?

For example if you press volume up and volume down at the same time = mute? etc.?

I would also like to use that for brightness - for example steambutton + volume up/down = brightness up-down etc.

This could also be customizable so everyone can pick whatever he wants?

My wishlist for Valve:
volume up + volume down short press = mute
steam button + volume up/down = brightness up/down
volume up + volume down long press = turn off display

For brightness there're already the combo Steam button+Left Joystick Up/Down.
Hold Steam button for others shortcuts.

I'll second that. I understand that nobody will change the hardware to add another button, but at least some shortcut, like "Steam" + something would be really nice to have. When something happens in real life, like I need to speak to someone, I want to mute the game with one click, and then return to the previous volume in one click, without pressing "volume down" until it's zero and then trying to find right volume when I want to turn it back. Honestly, I would even trade having volume + and - controls for one mute button - I actually rarely change volume while in game, but I often need mute, and that's pain.

This needs to be higher everywhere apparently. I feel this should be like a basic function. Truly simple to accomplish as well. Wish I knew how to code, otherwise a decky plugin like this could work magic.

Agree. Sometimes I have downtime and a quick mute and unmute would be nice if I have to put it down for a few minutes and don't want it playing game audio. This could be every 5 minutes sometimes. Just would be nice to press both volume buttons to mute, or steam button+ right or left.
