How to install a CD game on the Deck?
Hey guys

Can anyone explain to me how I could install a CD-game (Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Carbon or Underground) on the Deck?

Please keep in mind that I don't know anything about programming or computer terms. Please keep it as simple as possible.

Would truly appreciate it if you guys could help me out. I looked up guides and videos but they use terms I don't really understand.

It can't be done, not using simple terms. It's too complex, the fact you are trying to run a windows game on linux is already going to make it technically oriented.

option 1, research if it can be run without cd or needs no-cd patch, rip disc to iso, extract, install in Bottles or something similar.

option 2, buy external CD ROM, run in Bottles or something similar.

option 3, rebuy on steam for $20 and save yourself the trouble

Lutris has support for some games that are installed via CD

to understand something you dont, you need to research that too. Anyway, just like no one needs to understand how a car works to be able to learn how to drive it, you dont need to understand everything mentioned in a tutorial, as long as you can follow the instructions.

if what confuses you is related to terminology about the OS, then just spend a few minutes learning a bit about it, so you can easily follow more tutorials to be able to do more with less pain.

i dont know anything about programming, but ive been using linux for more than 5 years, and still ignore a lot of stuff. that doesnt prevent me from installing games, or trying software; my ignorance only backfires when i install something i shouldnt, or try the wrong approach to solve an issue. so as long as you dont like to test old programs, or try to fix something without searching for more information, or changing os settings without reading a bit first, you should be safe of most related issues.

buying a cd reader could be helpful to rip the game or install it directly, but telling him to "run in bottles" isnt. to use "bottles" directly (to attempt running games) is more complex than using lutris, which makes the process more straightforward and no need to be guessing which settings could work. Even with basic understanding about bottles, is never the best approach to try to use them if theres a install script for a game in lutris or another more direct method.

yes im sure it can be done, im sure, just buy external CD/DVD ROM, dont cost much and then get exe file so dont needed the CD to run it, from a site like this https://gamecopyworld.com/games/index.php

Ok, is there an install script for Need for Speed in lutris? I'm not sure there is, so how would I tell him to go use it? That's just getting in to the weeds, where they declared they don't want be. Lutris is covered under "or something similar".

Really what I was trying to communicate is they need to be prepared to learn "computer terms" or go with option 3.
I've installed Midtown Madness (1999 win xp CD game) successfully, definitely look into Lutris.

If those games are on steam you would save yourself time and headaches if you just spend money to buy it on steam digitally.
Yeah the problem is those games aren't on steam.
It's Need for Speed underground 1, underground 2, Most wanted 2005 and Carbon. Otherwise I'd happily spent some money for the digital edition but they don't sell those..

I've just installed on pc, copied it to flash stick then copied on deck in desktop mode, added speed.exe as a no steam game then back to game mode.

Interesting, this is something I do understand haha. One question though, how do you insert the flash stick into the deck as it doesn't have a USB slot? Or do you use a docking station?
You need a usb type a to usb type c adapter or cable, it doesn't have to be a dock but that's probably the most convenient way to get it.

Alright, I ordered a steam decking dock a couple of days ago. So I can use that to do the transfer, right? Or that dock doesn't have the right USB slots?

Thanks in advance for your input already, btw!

You know that games on steam client are alot of windows based ones. For example COD MW3 and God of War and many more. But since steam has something called Proton it sorta converts windows language into Linux which makes games then runnable on Linux. But not all games can or will work with proton or proton-GE.

Yup that'll do it, the 3 usb 3.1 type a connectors should be able to handle any device.

Yes, I have a usb c to usb adapter from a phone, I've used that instead of buying a 20 euros usb c hub with hdmi, rj and usb a thinking I can wait for official Deck from Valve. I've copied this way other gog games too and they worked fine, for some I had to choose compatibility as proton experimental or 7.
Just make a folder somewhere, copy game files and folder from pc, go to steam in desktop mode and add .exe as a no steam game then switch to game mode and it should appear on separate tab. from there you can open properties and choose compatibility in case is not working.
