The thing about xbox one controllers is there are two versions. Bluetooth (works out of the box) and non-bluetooth (older, with proprietary communication protocol). The latter requires a wireless adapter. The adapter requires drivers (windows and linux drivers available). Its basically a question if valve supports this or no.
Bluetooth is limited and it absolutely sucks.
My Xbox 360 Controller is wired

If you have a different model that doesn't need xone, but it still isn't working, you may just need to update the controller (using Xbox accessories app on PC)

Would be nice if Valve included this driver in future updates like they did in steamos 3.4 with the 8bitdo drivers.
This works fine and Its what I've been doing ever since I've gotten the deck. At least we have a workaround. Every update will break this and you need to reinstall it again. Deck updates come about once per month so... ymmv. Its just annoying to me since I take my deck out with my controllers about once a month to play at other peoples houses and I'm always reminded to reinstall the drivers just as I'm about to leave.
come on Valve! I wanna mess around with this thing on my tv.
