The files you need are in most countries illegal and let's be honest here as if people really backup their own games. Especially switch games where you already need a modable Switch which are mainly used to play said "backups" you get from other sources.
You don't need a modable / modded Switch (other than if you have a newer switch). You need a switch that you can interrupt the boot process to load another environment via the Recovery Mode so that you are able to actually backup your Switch authorization keys and be able to dump/backup your purchased games.
There is NO RECOVERY MODE WHATSOEVER on Switch, on first gen systems there was a "leftover" from Tegra tablets that allowed a pseudo recovery mode (for all intents and purposes a hardware glitch) in the Tegra chipset. Someone found out this was still present on the Switch, and they found a way to trigger this mode (by shorting some of the pins on one of the joycon rails) and then exploit this mode to run unsigned code. This code runs at the lower level, even before the kernel is loaded, this means the Switch was blown wide open.
Nintendo was aware of the issue and every single Switch console built after the first year IIRC had this exploit fixed. So yes, you need a moddable\exploitable switch (namely, a gen one Switch) to dump your decryption keys games or whatever, because to run the dumper you need to load the explot and then the unsigned code that does the dumping.
But nowadays even my grandma can find a random set of Switch decryption keys with a google search, no original Switch needed.
Hmm.. What does RCM stand for again? You are mistaking the attack vector, a hardware flaw with fusee gelee, with RCM. Switches still have RCM. Nintendo just fixed the exploit with the USB mode which didn't limit the amount of data that could be copied. I know perfectly well how it works and use the ReCovery Mode to actually legitimately dump/backup my digital Switch games to play via Yuzu on my Steam Deck.
My last post replying to you because you are blatantly discussing piracy which is against the forum rules.
Except for the fact that the so called "recovery mode" is not allowed by Nintendo as they removed the exploit that allowed data to be dumped from every switch made in the last 5 years. The vast majority of NSW consoles sold today do not have this capability which was never intended by Nintendo to exist. So yeah, if you unironically believe that people do it because of "legal backups", you're incredibly naive, especially if you consider the fact that the Deck is not even that good for NSW emulation.
It being allowed or not does not change that it is a recovery mode that allows development options such as dumping games.
The deck does NSW emulation fairly well.
Come on, don't play dumb, it is an exploit executed through a pseudo recovery mode that Nintendo was quick to remove from all of their consoles as soon as it became known it existed. So don't say "that ALLOWS development options", no such thing is "allowed" in any way by Nintendo.
Also, shorting the pins on the rail to enter RCM technically voids the warranty (ie if you short the wrong pins and fry your NSW).
Also, Nintendo themselves on their FAQ claim that Emulation is not allowed, and infringing on their copyright. So technically you are not allowed to dump your keys and games EVEN IF your switch is exploitable. Back to my original point, to answer the OP, people emulate the switch on Deck because piracy.
Also the excuse that "so I don't have to bring both Deck and Switch around" does not hold, because there is NO OFFICIAL WAY whatsoever to transfer saved games between switch consoles, or between emulator and Switch. To do this you need homebrew, that is ran using the aforementioned unauthorized exploits, which in turn is possible on a very small minority of gen 1 NSW consoles.
It also flies in the face of any country with consumer protections that permit legitimate backup of any software. Also, in many countries, emulation and virtualization of legally acquired software is 100% legal. Only reasons emulation is a legal grey area is because of pirated ROMs and some countries don’t have consumer protections on legit backups or have stipulations that it can’t break DRM.
There's literally a whole homebrew store of original content because of RCM.
Nintendo allowing it or not does not make the action inherently illegal or in anyway a bad thing.
It was actually ruled in the 90s that the emulators are 100% legal after a guy sold a CD that allowed computers to emulate PS1 games.
Sony sued and lost.
I never said it was a bad thing, as a matter of fact, I'm a huge fan of emulators and I do emulation myself, and I do emulate on the deck as well. My point was that I believe most people do it for piracy, considering the fact emulating on Deck is worse than playing on the original Switch. From my limited experience in the matter, Deck is pushed to its absolute limit to emulate Switch, this means a lot of heat, fan noise, and pitiful battery life. I tried Xenoblade Chronicles DE on Deck, it is literally heavier on the RAM and CPU than a high end game like Cyberpunk, battery life is also somehow worse. It seems far better to me, having both Switch and Deck, to play Switch games on Switch for superior performance (in many cases, such as Xenoblade) and better battery life.
On top of that, you can't transfer your saves between emulator and Switch (unless you have cfw on Switch), so the excuse that some people don't feel like carrying both also doesn't hold. Having the choice, and removing piracy from the equation, I also would be very surprised if anyone, having both systems, would resort to emulation on Deck of all places when it comes to Switch games. On the other hand, Switch emulation on a proper Desktop is absolutely amazing, many games look orders of magnitude better when upscaled to 1440p or 4k.
That excuse does hold.
You assume they are wanting to transfer saves between devices. Some games easily run better emulated on the Deck than the Switch. That completely removes the need to transfer saves because why would you go back to inferior performance?
