See if it notices if the headphones are plugged in.
Set them as the default audio output in desktop mode with the checkbox.
The Steam audio menu should be all that’s required for this to be good UX
but it is automatic.

3.5mm jack or are they usb / bluetooth?
usb devices needs software support. Many audio hw makers are notorious Linux hostile like creative.
Open up the audio test in desktop mode and hear whether you have any sound.
