Steam Deck

Steam deck vs nintendo switch
I'm currently at 98% for my steam deck so it won't be long until i get it. I also have a nintendo switch and am thinking about selling it. I have seen that people are playing nintendo games on their steam deck but I have no idea how to do that, is it hard to get nintendo games on your steam deck? And will i even use my switch when I get the steam deck?

Would like to hear some people's opinions.

Biggest issue is getting the games - if you want to get them legally, you pretty much have to own a Switch anyways. It's also guaranteed to run the games.

Personally, I'm just keeping my Switch. It won't get games as often as it'll just be exclusives now, but between the games I already own and some upcoming titles, I'll still get a fair amount of use from it.

If you go to r/steamdeck on reddit you can see how long it will take to get your steam deck. I'm currently at 98%.

Thanks

You have 34 days, 05 hours, 49 minutes and 13 seconds worth of pre-orders to go until it is your turn (not real time)
You're 92.02 % of the way there!

Checked again today, and now it's 91% ... going backwards... lol..

If you have STEAM and a PC the STEAM Deck is a no brainer imho.

This is legit a game changer for me. It does what the PS Vita was supposed to do: Pick up a game you played on your PS3 where you left off on a handheld device and switch between them fluidly. I've wanted this for years.

The fact it is a computer in your hand and the input is -- going to be completely honest -- next level... It's a game changer. It really is a game changer. I genuinely think the STEAM Deck's controller are what Microsoft and Sony will look toward for their next gen controllers. It's far ahead of the curve and for that reason alone it's one hell of a buy. The community layout options as well... Dayum... I did not know about the easy swap of controls within a second of choosing the control layout based on official layouts and community layouts.

The device is also very powerful for what it is. Some titles are just poorly optimized and don't run well but they're few and far between in general. Most will run 60FPS 800p without a hiccup and Elden Ring still feels really good at a solid 40fps on the small screen of the Deck.

Considering what this device is and how it links effortlessly into your PC account... This is both a fantastic device for people who are new to PC gaming and want to get a console and those who are PC veterans but want something to play on the couch or in bed or while travelling or, hell, even while you're sitting next to your PC(Because the controls are just THAT GOOD!!).

The whole device feels fantastic to play with and being able to switch effortlessly between desktop(Linux) and STEAM... *Chef's kiss*.

I can't stop gushing over this. When I first got it I thought "Meh... I have a PC..." but then getting curious to play some games like Elden Ring, all the souls games, a lot of roguelites(Rogue Legacy 2 is a must buy!) and then trying WoW and Guild Wars 2 with the STEAM Deck's controls and(For WoW) addons to use a controller... It's just so damn good.

This device is a THE handheld revolution. The Switch started it but this is carrying it to the next level. It's just a shame it's so hard to get one.

The Steam Deck is great for what it is - a way to play PC games on the go. For many people, including myself, it can be a game changer.

That said, it does depend on how much you value a mobile platform and how tight your budget is. It's not for everybody.

I . . . don't think Microsoft and Sony will borrow too much of the Steam Deck's controls.

The Steam Deck's controls are great for the job they have to do - play PC games on a mobile platform. That's why you have two touch pads, four paddles, and a touch screen.

Because of the nature of PC games, Valve really needed to throw as many controls and customization as possible on the device. RTS games need bandboxing and good map control. Flight Simulators have an absolutely insane number of key bindings. Many PC games are not built at all with a controller in mind.

But for standard consoles, like the Xbox and Playstation, the games are already optimized for standard controllers. All of the extra inputs and customization would just add more to the cost, without much benefit.

. . . although to be fair, the PS5 controller is actually not too far from the Steam Deck's controls. The central touch pad can work similar to the touch pads on the Deck, and it has the improved feedback / rumble. For anybody not fortunate enough to get a Steam Controller, the PS5 controller is probably the next best thing for use with the Steam Deck if you want to play it docked.

Although it would be great if Valve were to make a 2nd generation controller based on the Steam Deck's layout.

or, hell, even while you're sitting next to your PC(Because the controls are just THAT GOOD!!).

Well . . . .

Ultimately, the controls are a compromise, and on a PC you can find control setups a lot more optimal. Most games are great with keyboard and mouse, some are great with a game controller, and some are great with a HOTAS. One of the great things about a PC is being able to use very optimal controls for the games you prefer.

I will say it is great to have another big competitor in the handheld market, and I definitely hope it nudges Nintendo to make a console that's actually more powerful than the Switch.

. . . and yes, I love my Steam Deck, I think it's a great device, I played a bunch of Timberborn and some Terminal Velocity (old DOS game) while waiting for my car to be repaired. It's also become a second console for me, I now play a lot of games on my TV that I used to need to play on my PC. I have a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard that works well, and a lap-desk thing.

One thing that I do think the Steam Deck could do better is to integrate better with non-Steam games. Which is especially important for games from GoG or using an emulator. Can be difficult to find community layouts, plus artwork tends to be very much missing. Thankfully SteamGridDB can help, but it still takes a lot of work to import all of the needed artwork.
If you want a closed eco system, longer battery time and Nintendo type Games stay with the Switch.

If you want AAA Core Gamer Games on the go and are willing to fiddle around on some Games, get the Deck. Remember its a PC. And PC gaming involved from the very beginning fighting with .ini Files, Graphic Setting and so on. This Website have solutions for many PC Gaming Problems www.PCGamingWiki.com

For me is the Steam Deck besides Playstation 5 the best Hardware of the last Years. As mentioned Emudeck did a great Job. Playing 13 Sentinals right now with the Switch emu. Xenoblade Cronicle 1-3 have 30-50 Fps and are Playable.
Also Playing Xenosaga 1-3, Shadow Hearts, Arc the Lad with a Playstation 2 Emulator. This is something i wanted for a very long time. PLAYSTATION 2 Games on the go. Sony missed this chance with the PsP and Vita.

Thanks for the tips everyone! I just purchased my steam deck and am really excited for it.

What i love about the switch is that i'm able to play on the couch or in bed. That's de biggest reason i bought the steam deck, i like games on steam but hate playing on my laptop.

I won't sell my switch yet but if i am not going to use it anymore after getting the deck i probally will.

got my confirmation and completed my order :) woot... now waiting till it arrives... how long that might be..
There is small chance you get a bad Deck as all electrics have some failures. I've noticed my L1 button is starting to fail. I'm having to press it harder for it to read.
If anything you would want to hold on to your Switch just in case your have hardware failure.

From what I've seen this is a physical design flaw, search around on youtube.

Just keep in mind that not every Switch game will work on the Deck, and not every game that works will work well. Nintendo is also adding Denuvo DRM to make it harder to run Switch games on anything other than a Switch, so you'll have that to contend with.

If you really want to play modern Nintendo games, you'll probably still want to keep your Switch. If you don't feel so strongly about it and can take or leave those games, maybe consider selling it. Just be careful that you don't go into the Deck with certain unrealistic expectations. You'll only end up disappointed. It's an incredible piece of hardware. Just be aware of it's limitations and you'll be happy.

Side note:
Older Nintendo systems like the Gamecube, N64, and SNES work beautifully on the Deck. Portable Mario Kart Double Dash is a wonderful thing, and Primehack makes the Metroid Prime trilogy feel like a modern console game with dual-stick FPS controls.

Heh. people think denuvo is like a silver bullet or something. It's not. Every game that uses Denuvo has always been broken eventually. All it does is make the games run worse on the original system for people who actually buy it. It's a silly system that actually makes piracy preferable for the enhanced performance after Denuvo has been removed.
