For best results, format the SD card in Game Mode (default UI)
Steam -> Settings -> Storage
If you can't format it there, you can use the tool mentioned (KDE Partition Manager, from the start menu in desktop mode) and wipe out the partition table for the SD card and try again. (However, don't wipe out any other partitions, you can break the deck.)
For reference, my SD card device shows up as /dev/mmcblk0
The Steam Deck devices shows up as /dev/nvme0n1pX (Phison)
There is a thread on here (a couple of them I believe), which explains everything on what has been found to be the best way to format these cards. As a result of personally participating in some of that testing, I found the best results was to format the cards on my Windows PC, using the free version of the Minitool Partition Wizard. Testing was done using several methods, and the best performance several of us found was to use that method.
Formatting using KDE worked, the vast majority of the time, but those cards did not perform as well as the cards formatting with the method I just described, even after running the trim that was requested in the thread.
