Ark application issues
I'm not currently able to use ark to compress/decompress both .rar and .7zip files. In the settings it shows that these are optional dependencies, but there's no way to enable them.
I've also tried installing them manually with the sudo pacman commands, but there are errors. This would possibly break the integrity of the current immutable root file system, so it's not allowed. Is there some way to get this to work without removing those restrictions? I'd very much like to simply be able to enable those file types for Ark.

look for a flatpak software that works with .rar and .7z

the dependancies will come with the software, and flathub.org is used as a repo by the Discovery store in the Deck's desktop mode, and this won't require write permissions on the immutable filesystem

a list of opensource linux alternatives to Ark:
https://alternativeto.net/software/ark/?license=opensource&platform=linux

Ark itself is on flathub.org (and flatpak versions of apps can be installed side-by-side with non-flatpak versions):
https://flathub.org/apps/details/org.kde.ark

PeaZip seems promising too:

I'm seeing similar issues. The problem is Discover is utterly broken. On my 'brand' new deck I can't install ANY software as Discover is telling me I have no internet connection. I'm typing this on the Deck. To check I'm not going mad I've got a continous ping going. It's fine. Discover also isn't displaying what is installed on the Deck already.

I can't 'fix' anything as pacman is essentially useless on the SteamDeck due to the filesystem being immutable.

Being reliant on Discover would be fine IF Valve had'nt ♥♥♥♥♥♥ Discover up the arse.

geesh... an immutable filesystem was supposed to prevent those things...

looks like it's time to try to reimage your deck, or to bite the bullet and make the system patition writeable so you can pull it back together

Yeah recovery image can be found here: https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/1B71-EDF2-EB6D-2BB3

You will need a usb c memory stick or a hub though.

So rather than taking the sledgehammer approach. After about 20 minutes of racking my brains. I deleted the incorrect flathub repos from Discover and re-added the correct details

for the flathub-beta repository
https://flathub.org/beta-repo/flathub-beta.flatpakrepo

for the offical flathub repository
https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo

What the hell Valve are doing I don't know. My Deck was delivered to me 12 hours ago so I have no idea how they could have configured it so wrong out of the gate???

Discover is now working properly.

How someone with 0 Linux knowledge is supposed to sort that out I don't know.

I think the gpg keys must have been wrong or something.

Good news you got it working in the end. Mine was fine, obviously something wasn’t configured properly with yours, weird as I’d assume they all get flashed with the same image .
