Screen protectors and the 512 gb version
Has anyone put a screen protector on their 512 gb model? I've read that doing so would potentially affect the anti-glare screen. I normally put a screen protector on all of my devices so I am starting to think I should have pre-ordered the 256gb model! Perhaps I will just need to be extra careful when I do get one...

My 512 steam deck just came today and in preparation I ended up buying two types of protector (matte and gloss). I think I will try gloss first and then matte if I can't stand the reflections...
so you bought the expensive screen and gonna put it under some glossy protector???

Yeah in hindsight I should have bought the 256gb one but I was mostly buying it for the additional storage. I doubt I will ever use it outside so I don't think glare will be much of an issue.

So with the JSAUX protector, it seems to work fine, no real meaningful reduction in visual quality that I can see. The touchscreen still appears to work fine.

The little 'jig' the JSAUX screen protector comes with did make it much easier to get perfectly centered. This is a 'glossy' screen protector, so there is no matte coating on it or anything. It appears to be good quality but it does slightly defeat the purpose of having the laser etching a little, as it raises screen reflectivity. The etching on the 512gb Steam Deck does do some good however, as it is not quite as reflective as a plain glossy screen would be.

I would say it was worth putting on. Gives peace of mind that the screen of my Steam Deck will be protected.

I've been thinking about getting a screen protector on my 512 version but decided not to. I don't expect the screen to get scratched or damaged and I don't want to ruin the ani-glare effect. I will consider getting a screen protector when I come across one that retains the anti-glare properties of the screen, but I will not actively look for one.

I personally prefer having a protector for the peace of mind it gives, eventually all screens get scratched, I would rather it be a protector getting scratched instead of a screen that is much more difficult to replace.

Sure thing. But I specifically went for anti-glare screen of the most expensive Deck, not for the storage.

I have a tempered glass screen protector on mine and it does make it more reflective than without it but its still refracting direct light. The glare is still diffused and softer compared to the 256GB version display.

Also haven't had any issues with the touch screen input.

I put one on my 64 GB model. It was the highest rated, most sold one on Amazon. Looked nice, but my touch screen sensitivity took a dump. I took the protector off, and now it's fine again. I'll skip the screen protector and just be extra careful with it. I've never broken a screen before, and I don't expect I'll start now.

After playing on the steam deck over the weekend I decided against a gloss screen protector. I love the matte look of the 512 screen too much. I have put a Magglass matte screen protector on instead. The plus points for this is that it retains the matte look of the screen and totally gets rid of any reflections. It also doesn't leave finger print marks as much as the stock 512 screen as well. However it definitely adds a slight softness to the image. I would say it's
not as sharp. It becomes unnoticeable after a while especially when gaming. This trade-off is still worth it for me.

I did also buy the benzacap steam deck case as well as some thumb caps but I am going to send these back. I like the feel of the steam deck without these on and I end up just putting the machine back in the carry case anyways after I have finished using it.

Reflections is like FPS, once you get used to higher fps ( no reflections) You cant get go back to the lower FPS (reflections.)

You never care about reflections until you experience a display with zero reflection.

You dont understand just how annoying reflections are until you dont have to deal with them. Kind of like commercials.. I will never go back to cable because of commercials.

Once you do experience a reflectionless screen, you can never go back.

Yes. "Better" becomes a new "standard". If you have a 140Hz screen, go ahead and lower your refresh to 60Hz and try moving stuff around in your desktop.
Try switching off ray tracing in your favourite game, or Anti Aliasing.

Sure, you can adjust back to lower standard. But is that what we want to do? Lowering the bar instead of raising it?

Was with you until Anti-Aliasing. AA looks like someone smeared Vaseline on my display. DSR looks significantly better if you have the GPU headroom, and NVIDIA's DLDSR is pretty crazy.

Also, yeah technically they are kinda a form of AA as that AA is a byproduct of DSR.... but sadly that isn't really an option for Steam Deck.

I can agree with this. I lived for a long time in the world of CRT's (yeah I know, i've been around a while) - and the reflections off the glass always bothered me (yes yes, nobody uses real glass anymore, old... anyway!) - Then LCD displays became all the rage, and I finally picked one up and it had a matte screen, and NO reflections! I sort of fell in love with matte screens from that moment.

These days, I demand every screen I use be matte, because reflections suck the big one. I am willing to forgive the steam deck a bit on this, because the screen is fairly small, but I did spring for the 512 version partially for the matte laser etching, I was worried about doubling up on the matte, which is why I got a normal glossy/clear style protector. And it does have some reflections in some positions, which makes me mildly sad.

Enough waffling on I suppose, i'll try to get to some sort of point - There is always a give and a take there, and especially with a matte surface on a very small screen, I imagine that's why valve decided to go with laser etching instead of the more traditional matte surface coatings. All that being said, with the gloss screen protector over the laser etched screen, i still do get a bit of the anti-reflectivity, but it is definitely not as effective as it was previously, so now I have to angle the screen a tiny bit during play to avoid them sometimes. But altogether, it's not terrible.

I will definitely be sticking with Matte style screens for my normal monitors though, and any laptop I get will definitely be matte. Reflections still suck! That much hasn't changed.

I'm not reading all the comments, but here's my experience/opinion.

"Etched Glass" basically just means matte finish instead of a gloss finish, which reduces glare, but doesn't mean 0% glare. Under certain lighting conditions (I.e. outdoors) a matte finish will have a wider viewing angle than a gloss finish due to the anti-glare properties.
The display panel itself is the same for all Deck variants.

I highly recommend the screen protector from DBrand, I've seen people say things like "it's a little more expensive" or "it's pricier", however, I've had quite a lot of experience with various brands of screen protectors, my go-to for the longest time was Zagg before they sold out to Samsung and Apple, and not only is DBrand at the top of my list as far as quality is concerned.

Whenever deciding and placing my order, I was not expecting the experience that I received with DBrand, but I personally feel like I under payed for what I got. For a total of $44.90 for the screen protectors, which includes 2 by default, and express shipping, I'll gladly sacrifice my "etched glass" for peace of mind. And if you're patient and careful with the installation, you have to look really hard to even notice the screen protector is there once installed, it's such a precise fit.

Yes, they're glossy, yes they have glare, yes $45 is technically "expensive" for screen protectors. But, the touch responsiveness is flawless, (I'd even say "improved", but that's a sort of placebo effect from the texture of the glass and not exactly plausible.)

I now know why they chose to go with "DBrand", because their D is bigger than ours and it's big enough to be a brand.

If you think I'm just a member of their marketing team, that's ridiculous, I've got 125 tabs of Steam Discussions to go through and DBrand couldn't pay me enough to waste my time leaving this comment, mostly because they keep spending all of their money on that star-destroying laser.
But, if you think that I'm wrong, that's okay, however, if you can afford to compare quality, I highly recommend you do so.

Short of running around with a naked Deck because you can afford to replace the display if it gets shattered, your options as far as quality is concerned are limited, spend $45 replacing your 0.02¢ Amazon Basics screen protector every two weeks, or spend $45 to give your Deck display what it deserves, safety equivalent to the peace of mind inducing hug that you give your anxiety.

You'll choose DBrand.

I just skimmed your message cause holy hell you need to make more than one giant paragraph that is hard as hell to get thru, but why not just protect and be careful with your 700 dollar handheld and you won't break the screen?

If you drop the deck i highly doubt a little piece of glass is going to stop the screen from shattering and if you drop something on it well ♥♥♥♥ why are you holding something over it to begin with?

I've had every kind of handheld from og gameboys to psp to the deck and I never even got a scratch on any of my unprotected screens. Just don't be careless and treat things with respect. Just food for thought friend.

Sorry, for the single paragraph. I'll edit that momentarily.

Maybe this can put my life and experiences into perspective for you.

True story example of my "luck", I once dropped my phone on carpet and somehow managed to shatter the glass.

I do treat my belongings with care and respect, however accidents do happen and others don't show the same consideration.
