Yeah in hindsight I should have bought the 256gb one but I was mostly buying it for the additional storage. I doubt I will ever use it outside so I don't think glare will be much of an issue.
The little 'jig' the JSAUX screen protector comes with did make it much easier to get perfectly centered. This is a 'glossy' screen protector, so there is no matte coating on it or anything. It appears to be good quality but it does slightly defeat the purpose of having the laser etching a little, as it raises screen reflectivity. The etching on the 512gb Steam Deck does do some good however, as it is not quite as reflective as a plain glossy screen would be.
I would say it was worth putting on. Gives peace of mind that the screen of my Steam Deck will be protected.
Also haven't had any issues with the touch screen input.
not as sharp. It becomes unnoticeable after a while especially when gaming. This trade-off is still worth it for me.
I did also buy the benzacap steam deck case as well as some thumb caps but I am going to send these back. I like the feel of the steam deck without these on and I end up just putting the machine back in the carry case anyways after I have finished using it.
You never care about reflections until you experience a display with zero reflection.
You dont understand just how annoying reflections are until you dont have to deal with them. Kind of like commercials.. I will never go back to cable because of commercials.
Once you do experience a reflectionless screen, you can never go back.
Try switching off ray tracing in your favourite game, or Anti Aliasing.
Sure, you can adjust back to lower standard. But is that what we want to do? Lowering the bar instead of raising it?
Was with you until Anti-Aliasing. AA looks like someone smeared Vaseline on my display. DSR looks significantly better if you have the GPU headroom, and NVIDIA's DLDSR is pretty crazy.

Also, yeah technically they are kinda a form of AA as that AA is a byproduct of DSR.... but sadly that isn't really an option for Steam Deck.
These days, I demand every screen I use be matte, because reflections suck the big one. I am willing to forgive the steam deck a bit on this, because the screen is fairly small, but I did spring for the 512 version partially for the matte laser etching, I was worried about doubling up on the matte, which is why I got a normal glossy/clear style protector. And it does have some reflections in some positions, which makes me mildly sad.
Enough waffling on I suppose, i'll try to get to some sort of point - There is always a give and a take there, and especially with a matte surface on a very small screen, I imagine that's why valve decided to go with laser etching instead of the more traditional matte surface coatings. All that being said, with the gloss screen protector over the laser etched screen, i still do get a bit of the anti-reflectivity, but it is definitely not as effective as it was previously, so now I have to angle the screen a tiny bit during play to avoid them sometimes. But altogether, it's not terrible.
I will definitely be sticking with Matte style screens for my normal monitors though, and any laptop I get will definitely be matte. Reflections still suck! That much hasn't changed.
"Etched Glass" basically just means matte finish instead of a gloss finish, which reduces glare, but doesn't mean 0% glare. Under certain lighting conditions (I.e. outdoors) a matte finish will have a wider viewing angle than a gloss finish due to the anti-glare properties.
The display panel itself is the same for all Deck variants.
I highly recommend the screen protector from DBrand, I've seen people say things like "it's a little more expensive" or "it's pricier", however, I've had quite a lot of experience with various brands of screen protectors, my go-to for the longest time was Zagg before they sold out to Samsung and Apple, and not only is DBrand at the top of my list as far as quality is concerned.
Whenever deciding and placing my order, I was not expecting the experience that I received with DBrand, but I personally feel like I under payed for what I got. For a total of $44.90 for the screen protectors, which includes 2 by default, and express shipping, I'll gladly sacrifice my "etched glass" for peace of mind. And if you're patient and careful with the installation, you have to look really hard to even notice the screen protector is there once installed, it's such a precise fit.
Yes, they're glossy, yes they have glare, yes $45 is technically "expensive" for screen protectors. But, the touch responsiveness is flawless, (I'd even say "improved", but that's a sort of placebo effect from the texture of the glass and not exactly plausible.)
I now know why they chose to go with "DBrand", because their D is bigger than ours and it's big enough to be a brand.
If you think I'm just a member of their marketing team, that's ridiculous, I've got 125 tabs of Steam Discussions to go through and DBrand couldn't pay me enough to waste my time leaving this comment, mostly because they keep spending all of their money on that star-destroying laser.
But, if you think that I'm wrong, that's okay, however, if you can afford to compare quality, I highly recommend you do so.
Short of running around with a naked Deck because you can afford to replace the display if it gets shattered, your options as far as quality is concerned are limited, spend $45 replacing your 0.02¢ Amazon Basics screen protector every two weeks, or spend $45 to give your Deck display what it deserves, safety equivalent to the peace of mind inducing hug that you give your anxiety.
You'll choose DBrand.
I just skimmed your message cause holy hell you need to make more than one giant paragraph that is hard as hell to get thru, but why not just protect and be careful with your 700 dollar handheld and you won't break the screen?
If you drop the deck i highly doubt a little piece of glass is going to stop the screen from shattering and if you drop something on it well ♥♥♥♥ why are you holding something over it to begin with?
I've had every kind of handheld from og gameboys to psp to the deck and I never even got a scratch on any of my unprotected screens. Just don't be careless and treat things with respect. Just food for thought friend.
Sorry, for the single paragraph. I'll edit that momentarily.
Maybe this can put my life and experiences into perspective for you.
True story example of my "luck", I once dropped my phone on carpet and somehow managed to shatter the glass.
I do treat my belongings with care and respect, however accidents do happen and others don't show the same consideration.
