Dock Steam deck to a Laptop
Hi,

I would like to know if it is possible to dock Steam Deck to a laptop (which obviously has an HDMI port) and if it is possible to play correctly with the laptop keyboard ?

To illustrate my problem, I have an Asus ZenBook, it's a great laptop for working, but not great for gaming. Since it has an HDMI port as well as USB-C, I was wondering if it was possible to plug the Steam Deck on it and enjoy the Steam Deck's prowess directly on my computer that would not be able to run big games (like GTA 5 or RDR 2) ?

Thank you ;) (I don't speak well English, I hope I made no mistake haha)

Yes, you can use Steam Link and stream games to your laptop that are actually running on Steam Deck

the HDMI port on the laptop usually only supports outputting images to external screens, not receiving images to output on the laptop as if it was a screen

as others suggested you can put both devices on the same local network, then use the Steam Link app on the guest to access the host's Steam app

Steam Link is available as a flatpak on linux, so you should be able to install it from the Discovery store in Desktop mode on the Deck

Yes you can but not with a laptop, just only with a “lapdock”
Lapdock is a device that has its own touchscreen, keyboard, touchpad, battery and hdmi in & type c ports. It has a similar shape with a proper laptop but it doesn’t have any “intelligent” hardwares like mainboard, cpu, hdd etc. Just as a mobile monitor with own keyboard. I have one and I’m mainly using it with my phone (Huawei P40 Pro) for its desktop mode. So I can use my phone as a laptop. In addition to this, Steam Deck also support it. You only need a Type c Usb 3.1 Gen1 cable for the connection.

I hope I can upload photos correctly. Sorry for the low light, normally game seen on the screen similar with a laptop screen. Not a bad quality.

You can play your games by using keyboard, touchpad or even screen itself (it has a touch screen) However this fancy toy is a bit expensive, around 350 Euros.

You can search it via aliexpress or amazon. Like below.

This is speculation as I don't have my Deck yet to test these combinations with my existing equipment.

**IF** you really want to directly wire your Steam Deck into your laptop for Game Play, you'll need to do like I do for my PinePhone (and similar devices):
  • USB-C hub with PD (Power Delivery pass-through). The hub needs at least HDMI out and some USB ports. You might want a wired Ethernet port as well.
  • USB HDMI UVC class Capture dongle so the HDMI > USB appears as a 1080P webcam - expect video tearing. A UVC (USB Video Class) device is a natively supported device for all OS. These dongles vary in quality - you get what you pay for.
  • either a HID<>HID USB cable with necessary software OR just use a separate keyboard/mouse connected to the hub. Myself, I use an external Keychron mechanical which has a switch for wired/bluetooth (3 profiles). BT for laptop, wired connection for the hub. (I use a BT mouse with laptop, dongle mouse with the hub.)
Alternatively, you might be able to reduce Steam Link latency with a similar setup but using a Ethernet crossover cable between the Hub and Laptop ports. The Laptop would have to share it's internet connection with the Steam Deck. I've used this setup before with Raspberry Pi 3s & 4s.

Good luck.
