Tips for first day setup and QoL

Do any of you fine Deck owners have any advice on what to look out for or ways of avoiding some of the known bugs and issues?

I know there is a bug thread (and we should all be using it). I was just hoping someone might chime in with pro-tips and a desire to share in my sheer joy and nerdy revelry over the steam deck.

Here are some helpful tips:

Never update in Desktop mode, which is why the last update boot looped for some.

You don't need to fully charge before updating. You can simply have it plugged in while updating.

* If you want to do flatpak stuff & save some space, I've made post here on "flatpak" info and "proton_dist.tar" clean up.

I used a website called steamgrid db to find artwork for my non-steam "games", like Discord and Spotify. It keeps my library clean.

Regarding Steam Link, I've read several post (here & reddit) stating, if you have an nVidia rig, you should be using nVidia streaming and moonlight on the Deck. nVidia streaming tech hooks in directly via their GPU calls to be more performant. There's several howtos on Steam Deck Moonlighting just a search away.

If you have AMD rig, your options other than Steam Link may be limited.

ha ty, I ordered mine the same day reservations opened and just got it today sooooo.. yea the wait is a long one but hopefully worth it :D

I still haven't gotten in so I have yet to see the difference (desktop vs steam) but I will def keep this in mind going forward ty. I just finished setting my connection to be as painless for the Steam Deck (no hidden ssid, no wpa2ent, going wireless for initial setup) based on the feedback i saw....

Once you've fully charged the battery (+2h once it reaches 100%), package it back up and then put a new shipping label on it to ship it to me

Has it connected to the internet yet? That is likely due to it not reaching their tk server and thus not adjusting for daylight savings? Are they an hour off? or more?

Yea I am thinking this as well, it is off by an hour.

Sometimes this will be due to your ISP as well. Some ISPs will block port 123 (the default NTP port) due to its use in DDoS reflection amplification.

EDIT: Also, I don't need muffins or cat... just one neatly repackaged Steam Deck
But if you're making muffins... are they at least blueberry?

I think you're better off asking the guy that has 6 steam decks 8 steam decks

awesome ty retrogunner I will definitely look into the linux resources soon. I have 0 desire to windows. I'd rather carry and stream from a win device than bog down my shiny new deck.

I am (cautiously) quite impressed with the Steam Deck so far from a HW perspective. I know that there aren't many games that will use the controls as well as the Aperture Desk Job tech demo, but wow... this is definitely impressive.

I don't have experience with Steam Link but the implementation on the Steam Deck is top notch. Even when trying to break it through crazy resolutions and ultra settings/144hz unlocked vr, etc... it handled very well.

I've had wired peripherals with more pronounced input lag... and I am talking about input from deck registering on the host device :/
