- With the power supply plugged in, shut down the unit from Steam > Power. Check that the unit is completely off. There should be no haptic feedback from the trackpads.
- Hold Volume+ and Quick Access (...) for 10 seconds. Then unplug the power supply while still holding those buttons down.
- If done correctly, the LED should flash 3 times. A quick press of the power button should produce no response.
- To wake your Steam Deck from shipping mode, plug in the provided power supply and power it on normally.
You need to follow the instructions to the T in order to get the device into ship mode. If you don't get it into ship mode, the battery tech can't reset itself.
Another thing to try -- but only if you are comfortable, or if you have someone who is experienced -- is to pop open the Deck, disconnect the battery internally, and then hold Power for 30 seconds or so while the battery cable is unplugged, as this will empty all residual power in the systems (sometimes power remaining in capacitors can throw things off, this is a good way to "reset" it).
If none of that works, then it means you most likely have a faulty charge circuit and will need to RMA the device with Valve.
And, as well as with many cases before, the steps from https://steamcommunity.com/app/1675200/discussions/0/3186864655204473683/#c3186865169881051195 didn't help. The issue is that the device doesn't recognize actually the charger, it's stuck in a strange state.
And after a couple of attempts, it stopped charging completely ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
So, I couldn't put the device into shipping mode with a shortcut. But it worked from the BIOS.
- Shutdown the console
- Press "+" and then "power". the device will load into BIOS.
- Select "Setup Utility"
- On the next screen chose "Power" -> "Battery storage mode" -> confirm
After that, the charger was recognized by the console normally, and everything worked again.
