Steam Deck
Why have a Steam Deck when a laptop will do better?
Just wondering what others think. I might be missing something here for why someone would want to buy a Steam Deck.

The only allure I see here is that your Steam library is attached to a controller and screen in one. That is not enough for the price they are asking for.

Just by looking, I feel the design is poor and reminiscent of the Steam Controller. They just don't seem to know how to place buttons and controls in a way that would be comfortable and smart.

The same argument can be made for any handheld console its just what the deck is a x86 handheld console

Why get a laptop that is a large clamshell, with a keyboard, isn't usually as easy to get into to replace/repair parts, can't fit in your hands...
I can go on.
The Deck can't be compared to a laptop because that is not what the Deck is competing against.

Except with those, they are exclusive to that console. You can't play the games on other consoles. So far the only handheld console on the market is the Switch.
Soooo.... have you actually used the deck? Otherwise it is like reviewing a game by looking at the box art. I do not think much of most reviewers anyway, certainly not games but some of the more respected tech people have spent weeks with the Deck and I have to say...quite a few disagree with your in depth analysis.
Box art and baseball cards, it's a limited press, get it fast, it's rare and valuable.

Taste is subjective. I would argue that the design is perfect and others should adapt the same button layout. Steam Controller was and still is the best controller I ever used and still use to this day. I am typing this comment on Steam Controller btw.

If you strictly compare a Laptop and Steam Deck then most likely a Laptop with the same price will be WAY too underpowered. Sure it has keyboard for easier typing and better workflow like programing or editing etc.
Additionally you get integrated multiple controllers into Steam Deck while on a standard PC or a Laptop you would need to spend additional money for it.

Steam Deck is the best device money can buy right now and when you compare very similar devices by hardware that cost way over 1000€/$.
And looking at Laptops with same price as Steam Deck, they are undepowered.

You can carry a controller and connect it to the laptop.
You think it will be easier to repair/replace the parts for a Steam Deck? Highly doubtful.
Please go on, it is the point of the thread after all.
Sure it can, when the library can be played on both. It's competing with itself. While the PC can do infinitely more things than a Steam Deck can.

So let them come here and voice their opinion. You haven't voiced yours but parroted with others have said.

So, I have to carry another item along with the bulky laptop to play it on my lap instead of in my hands?
Now, price for laptops with comparable specs that have a custom apu designed specifically for this task. Any?

Caw caw. At least I am looking at what people that have actually used the deck extensively have to say instead of sitting in a vacuum. You can go look at what actual users have said or you can talk to us when our units aren't here yet. Mine arrives tomorrow but where do you think you will get more info right now? Besides your opening remark, despite saying you wanted to know what others think, reads like you have made up your mind and are saying, this is my opinion. Fight!.
It's bargin bin everything must go, cheap last gen parts from kids who are drunk on a treadmill.

Try to be happy, I know there are lot people manipulating you.

Enjoy the little device, think that's it from me for a while.

It's cool that you like the controller. I'm not looking down on anyone because they like it.
I would actually argue that you give up so much for a Steam Deck than with a Laptop for the same price.

And IFixIt did their own along with basically every other YouTuber who got their hands on it and went that deep into their reviews.
