Add roms to steam deck?
How?

The SD card from the deck does not work on the pc without formatting it.
Which option remains?

I've been using Resilio Sync, it takes a bit of setting up on Linux but it lets you sync files between machines over the internet

SMB, USB Stick, Cloud Transfer (Google, Microsoft, Dropbox, whatever). You can use the sd card on windows with a linux vm.

EDIT: There is a ext4 driver for windows, but i dont know if it support casefolding. https://www.paragon-software.com/us/home/linuxfs-windows/#

Get the steam externally attached rom disk drive for module expansion.

EXT2FSD probably will mount the SD card
One of the reasons I got the largest storage option Deck so that I could DL my roms then just xfer them to my sd card all on Deck. :B1:

I don't have my Steam Deck yet -- and for me it's non-issue as Linux desktop/laptop user. However, the Steam Deck itself holds the solution:
  • Linux has both a Samba Windows file server (copy to & from) and 'smbclient' so it copy to/from a Windows desktop share. If not installed, it could be.
  • If SteamOS 3.0 comes with neither smbd or smbclient, no worries - flatpak.org should have you covered for some other sync/share solution
  • and for the duct-tape solution, you can use Python in the Windows host's rom directory and start a SimpleHTTPServer then on the Steam Deck run 'wget -m -np -c YourWinIPAddr' in your SD card directory to mirror it.
This is Linux, there's so many ways to solve this problem. And for the truly lazy, just be patient. When the rest of us boffins finally get to hold our Decks in our hands, we'll create a standard solution for all to use - cause we're just as lazy and don't want to have repeat stuff ourselves.

You can setup SteamDeck as network storage through SAMBA on your Windows PC. But you need to setup Wireguard and IPTables rules for it, because SMB protocol itself is not historically secure and files can high potential to be hacked/modified by hacker.

If you know what you are doing, you can make SteamDeck storage accessable from WindowsExplorer on your PC.

I'm planning on doing that.

Apparently Nintendo has a bone to pick concerning emulation...

Set up a VPN? I don't think so. Secure your home router and only use SAMBA when connected to it.

Is it confirmed sd card is formatted ext4 and not exFAT?

SMB1 is insecure it is also deprecated on windows. if someone uses SMB2 or SMB3 all will be ok - stop scaring people, SMB is no more/less secure than any other file protocol (unless you want to talk about silly the NFS security model is...) tl;dr NEVER enabled SMB1 for any purpose be it on windows or linux.

ENABLE SSH.
DOWNLOAD WINSCP.

You already got this far into adding emulators.

All my roms totally legal backup copies of games I legitimately own on consoles are on an external hard drive I keep handy. I just plugged that into the Deck's USB-C port with an adapter and copied them over.

I use an external HDD. I shove stuff on there then just transfer them over by connecting it to the Deck. You can get a 1TB HDD so cheap now.
