Flatpaks to install
For those who don't RTFM (or the FAQ), it's stated that Steam OS 3.x supports using flatpaks as the preferred app install method:
* flatpaks will be installed into the same partition for the games (as to survive OS updates)
* using direct installs is not recommended - that you should know what your doing if you do and is subject to nukage on OS Updates.

That being said, you might consider to start browsing Flathub (such as their most https://flathub.org/apps/collection/popular installs). -- and yes, Steam is one of them given other Linux distros use Flatpaks too.

Cheers, retro.

Folks need to look beyond Games and general applications (like VLC & eBook readers).

In https://flathub.org/apps/category/System you can find other Emulators that are not in Games such as: DOSBox, Basilisk II (Color Macintosh 68K), GPU utilities, etc.

Or over in https://flathub.org/apps/category/Utility there's AntiMicroX (for controller mappings), JRomMananger, etc.

Great news., Brave is available on Flathub beta remote. See this thread: https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/issues/1000

flatpaks are too bloated imo

Sure, because they carry everything they need. Blame the Distributions for break ABIs or dont ship older versions anymore. Flatpak, AppImage, Docker or Snap was the natural development for linux software distribution.

I totally agree. Personally, I prefer AppImages. Not that it saves more space, but they are literally "download [to any directory] & run"

Unfortunately, Thomas Leonard's 0install never took off like these others - https://0install.net (legacy http://zero-install.sourceforge.net/) . It's been around 2003 (20 years ago) and part of the ROX Filer/Desktop.
