Hi, I am not sure where these people are getting their info. You can play Xbox game pass games on your steam deck but you need the ultimate sub to play so you can access cloud gaming. You will need an internet connection to play, whether cellular or wifi.
No it does not need windows to play. It can be played through Steam OS/Proton which is the software installed and it works fine.
Here is a link to the process. Its easy to do

So the question is that about playing your XBox games on a PC.
There's games labeled "XBox Play Anywhere". Those you can play directly on a PC without buying anything else.
Then there's the GamePass, if you got yours on XBox, you can download all those games on a PC and play them.
Then there's streaming which AFAIK is your only option anyway if you don't want to install Windows on your Deck (which you should wait with, last time I checked, the Windows driver situation still got room for improvement). Streaming you can do from the cloud or your own XBox.
series x games can be played on a mobile device, no need for a steam deck
Can I I play and setup without keyboard?
There is a built in keyboard on the deck by pressing “steam button and x” so no need for keyboard.
Only games that are on Xbox game pass can be played.
You cannot play "all" Xbox titles through their streaming service. Only certain titles are available for streaming.
How do I find what titles are available?
I just received my Steam Deck, and configured the XCG according to Microsoft's method, but it does not recognize the controller, although I put the Trackpad with mouse.
I don't understand what is not working.
