649$ version vs 15$ "anti-glare" screen protector
So I've already reserved the mid version of the Deck because I honestly thought that I won't care that much about the screen. I have since re-evaluated my priorities in life but still, I don't care about the SSD size, only the image quality. I'm going to be getting some sort of screen protection anyway so I'm mainly asking phone users who have "anti-glare" protectors, is the "anti-glare" part actually true? To be honest, I might be willing to splurge on the fattest version but what bothers me most is giving up that sweet sweet queue spot.

TL;DR: Do "anti-glare" screen protectors actually work and are they a viable alternative to spending 120$ on a better screen and getting dabbed on by the queue system?

Well to be fair I am kinda broke

Also, I can't seem to find any comparison of built-in anti-glare vs a protector on top of a glossy screen. Not talking about Steam Deck (obviously too early), even a phone comparison would give me some idea of how things look :/

What about anti-glare and anti-anti-glare screen protector. Bad jokes aside i doubt that valve is actually doing separate hardware revisions i bet the "anti glare etching" is just a foil on the screen.

I think it's going to come down to whether you are using this somewhere you expect to need anti glare. The regular screen is going to be better in ideal lighting conditions. Anti glare is going to be far superior outside, traveling, or in sunny rooms (since bad glare can literally make handhelds unplayable there is no comparison).

For me personally, I'd rather have an etched screen and know I can use it when traveling regardless of lighting/sun. The convenience of having more scenarios it's useful outweighs the marginal difference in screen quality ( and if I'm playing something where I care about great graphics I'm playing it on my desktop anyway).

This is a great point. I'm mostly going to use mine indoors or on gloomy Irish transport in the winter, so the anti-glare isn't that important. Anyone though, who's planning on spending loads of time with it outdoors, should really consider upgrading; glare will drive you nuts.

If money is no object then someone should obviously go for the 512, but otherwise, it's a "don't buy what you won't use often situation" for me.

I'll mostly use the device indoors anyway so I guess it's the mid version for me

i go with the anti glare version. because even room lights are horrible on glossy displays. the deck is not a device where i want to put it in one place and adjust the lightning around it to reduce reflections. its a mobile device where i can play everywhere and i dont want to turn off all light sources just to have no reflections on the display.
FatStupidAmericant 9 AGO 2021 a las 10:25 a. m.
glossy displays are better for when you can actually optimize the lighting in the room so that it's a non issue, because they are a little cleaner to see through

for a handheld that won't be stationary 24/7 it will be a huge issue

It doesn't matter if you are broke atm. Just don't be when you have to pay.

The thing is, I'm buying the Deck pretty much so I don't have to sit on my ass to play games after sitting on my ass for 8 hours at my job. For me it will be almost stationary.

I'll be using my Deck exclusively on the go so I went with the anti-glare etching.
From the current information, that anti-glare etching makes quite the difference. Applied external foils generally don't deliver the same image quality as anti-glaring integrated in the glass itself, but yeah, the low-end Deck model with a separate foil may offer a budget option.

Honestly, if you look at available comparison, anti-glare doesn't do much over basic screen. Which is already "Optically bonded IPS LCD for enhanced readability".
Anti-glare is just a nice edge over basic version.
And yes, you can apply matted screen protector to eliminate mirror effect.

According to LLT's preview video, there's more difference than "doesn't do much over the basic screen".
