To everyone wondering - IF Minecraft is released, it's going to be Bedrock edition, not Java.
With the announcement of Minecraft Dungeons coming to Steam, I've seen a lot of people wondering if Minecraft is going to be released on Steam. The answer is that it's a likely thing to happen, however not in the way most people might expect.

This is Microsoft ( Xbox ) publishing the game to Steam, likely for the same reason as they've been bringing many of their games to Steam, such as Forza. Microsoft has also been focusing more and pushing the Bedrock / Win 10 edition of Minecraft, meaning that it may be one of the next games they might focus on releasing on Steam.

Bedrock / Win 10 edition of the game would also be more beneficial for Microsoft to release on Steam for multiple reasons:
  • Bedrock edition is more profitable due to their use of in-game microtransactions or Minecoins for cosmetics, gameplay and server purchases. Java edition doesn't have anything like this outside of specific server purchases, which don't benefit Microsoft.
  • Bedrock has a bigger audience due to being available on tons of different platforms with full crossplay support between all platforms that have Bedrock edition available. Existing console and mobile players would also already be familiar with this edition of the game if they wanted to play on PC.
  • Bedrock edition also has native controller support, which Java edition doesn't have without the use of mods. This allows Bedrock edition to easily be available for the Steam Deck.
  • Bedrock is more optimized and has other newer features, such as RTX.

None of these options make it the better experience for PC players, however all of them benefit Microsoft. For them it wouldn't be a beneficial move to release Java edition to Steam instead of Bedrock, releasing both of the editions also would cause more confusion around people who may not know the differences between them.

Java edition has also always been on it's own "store" and launcher, while Bedrock edition is sold trough the Microsoft / Windows store as well as on all other platform storefronts.

tl;dr If Minecraft does find it's way onto Steam, which is likely, expect it to be the Bedrock edition of the game, rather than the "standard" Java PC version.

Those two features do sound like they make it a better experience.

You do also have to note that Bedrock is a buggy mess.

Yes it is a buggy mess, and I play it frequently. Just look at antvenoms videos or any other minecraft video.

Thanks in advance

Java is the original version, with less bugs, but takes more resources to run.
Bedrock originated from the Android and iOS version of Minecraft, and got ported everywhere else because of how lightweight it is compared to Java. Some things don't work out on other platforms, making a lot of bugs.

I don't understand, Minecraft Java already works on the deck as it supports Linux. There is no need to debate over which edition should come first as Java is already here...

Hope they release Bedrock edition on Linux too though.

For now you can use MCPE launcher to use the android version on Steam Deck:

You an already play both versions (even if the Bedrock edition isn't really released for Linux yet).

Whether it works or not on the Steamdeck does not matter. What matters is what makes Microsoft the most money when they OFFICIALLY release Minecraft on Steam
