Part of it is just going to be upgrading your parts and such, but yeah, large bosses are a ♥♥♥♥♥ because of their parts getting destroyed and them taking less damage for it.

how to you upgrade your parts?
is that something you need to unlock first?

Play the game on a lower difficulty up to Chapter 3. For some reason, they lock being able to actually upgrade your parts through Synthesis behind that.

You actually have to progress further and further into the game to unlock more upgrade options/raise your upgrade cap as well. It's kinda dookie.

Rifles or Long Rifles that can fire beams (when you hold down the trigger) can help with giant bosses, since the beam will pierce through their body to hit the targeted weak point and any on the way there. So can AoE weapons and missile launchers.

And don't forget you can jump/fly up to hit weak points that aren't close to the ground with close combat attacks.

Chapter 3 unlocks 合成, which allows you to upgrade parts. Until then you just need to swap out parts you pick up as you go.

To be fair, considering since both Breakers 3 and 4 are putting more of an emphasis on letting you build whatever you want without regards for stat strength being tied to parts like in 2 there's less "reward" for progressing the story than there would be otherwise, it's a pretty rational thing to do. Otherwise you'd have people complaining that there's no point to playing the story and/or that it's too easy because you can just max out with Level 50 parts right away and curb stomp everything.

True, but, at least from what I can recall from GB3, the stat increases from everything you could parts merge in the early stages of even Hardcore was minimal enough that you had to get further into the game and unlock Extreme and Newtype to really start getting parts with significant upgrades. Which, to me at least, seems like an issue with the way they handled progression and difficulty balancing in GB4, as all of that is very easily circumvented with just grinding once you actually unlock the ability to upgrade through Synthesis.

Like, playing at base Hardcore up to Chapter 3 shouldn't exactly feel like I'm playing on Extreme or Newtype with how health spongy enemies can be. I recall being able to comfortably play on Hardcore while progressing through GB3 initially. Granted that's not even remotely a problem anymore since I was able to more or less start maxing out my build before even actually replaying through GB4 on Extreme OR Newtype, but still.

Just play through the story first.

I'll say, Newtype was very shortlived for me. Around 10 hours to fully optimize my build, complete Survival and Bounty Hunter (BH I joined someone for), and run through Quests on that difficulty.

Largely due to good cartridges being easy to drop (at least for me), including evolve & upgrade materials as well as money.

More importantly gear and weapons being purely cosmetic and the fact you can just buy pretty much any Gunpla kit from the shop.

The TLDR is that it's absolute ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that you can't upgrade parts until chapter 3. Easily the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ part of this game, honestly, but still a major issue. Also, bosses becoming partially immune to damage on certain zones combined with lock-on being ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ against big enemies is the dumbest series of decisions I've ever seen.

That's the thing though, the level cap exists to stop that from happening - you can't go above Level 13 in Chapter 3, for instance.

That's also a big part of it I think, and a reason I despise "pure" gacha systems like the Ability Cartridges - it's just luck and no skill or strategy or thinking involved, and it only shortens a game's life instead of extending it. I'm really hoping we get a mod that fixes Ability Cartridge the way mods fixed Kaii Rensei in Monster Hunter Rise.
