Asgore is the Knight.
If the Knight is just one person, I think it's Asgore, and this is likely the theory I'll be sticking with until Toby gives new evidence.
The first thing that made me think was Ralsei’s name. Why’s it just an anagram of ‘Asriel’? Because Asgore’s bad at names. That's not much on its own, but then I started noticing things...
Firstly, Asgore’s one of the only Hometown monsters really having a bad time (aside from all the kids with broken families) and therefore one of the only Lightners with a motivation to reach some form of escapism (as many people point out the Dark Worlds are very escapist-themed). He's living in poverty, at risk of eviction and homelessness. His wife gives him the cold shoulder. His kid is possibly cold to him (Kris doesn't seem to like his hugs). His best friend from college is currently very sick and possibly even dying.
(Rudy is maybe another person with motivation, creating Dark Worlds to protect his family and him sneaking out of bed is the reason his health is deteriorating, but I think Asgore's more likely).
I’ve seen this kind of thing before: where the twist ‘villain’ is a bloke down on his luck, but seemingly harmless. It’s a very good character to make the mastermind, bc you never suspect them yet it makes sense when you think back on it (they have a motivation).
You know that theory that Ralsei’s the horned headband Kris used to wear? Asgore probably took it when he moved out to remember his children by. When he discovers the Dark Worlds, he takes it with him knowing it’ll turn into a Ralsei-themed Darkner, so he could be with some version of his son, as it’s very clear he misses his kids so much.
Asgore’s motive behind making the Dark Worlds is he keeps trying to make a world that’s ‘perfect’ for him to live in at least some of the time (I doubt he’d abandon his family in the Light World completely). He wants to create a world where things could be back to the way they used to be, with a whole family and a stable place to live. Where his longtime friend is healthy and able to hang out with him again.
He managed to create a Darkner version of one of his children (Asriel). Now, he’s trying to find a way to create a Kris-themed Darkner, but Kris has much fewer possessions than Ralsei (as can be seen in their shared bedroom) so there’s much less for Asgore to go on. He likely will try to make a version of Toriel who still loves him and a version of Rudy to hang out with.
But why does Asgore want to cause the Roaring? He doesn’t.
He doesn’t KNOW about the Roaring.
Just like King and Queen, he’s unaware of the consequences of his actions. Queen even said she was just guessing the Knight’s motives “Based On The Knight’s Actions” (or something like that). She didn’t see an evil motive in the Knight’s actions, because the Knight didn’t HAVE an evil motive.
I don’t have too much other firm evidence in the game, but I’d like to point out that Spamton uses the same phrase as Asgore.
Paraphrasing:
Asgore: “We could all take a ride around town”
Spamton: “TODAY, THE WHOLE FAMILY CAN TAKE A LITTLE [Ride Around Town]”
(Also, emphasis on “family.” The whole family riding around town was specifically what Asgore was talking about. I wonder if his truck was one of those “cungaderos” sold by Big Shot Autos).
We know from Ralsei how Dark Worlds and their inhabitants are influenced by the world around them. The environment the Fountain was made in and the Lightners who made it/travelled with them. There's evidence of this from King using the same exact line as Susie, Queen being a gamer like Berdly, etc. So it's possible Spamton has some dialogue influenced by the Knight just as King had dialogue influenced by Susie.
Finally, it’s not much, but Asgore’s armour in Undertale looks kinda knight-y.
Interesting theory. I don't personally think its gonna be the case.
Mostly based on the fact that Asgore was not in any of the dark fountains. If he was we would have seen him when closing them. So far the only fountain we can exit without closing it is the grand fountain and In chapter 1 when it and the classroom world was connected we needed to close the second fountain to be able to exit, the way out that is in chapter 2 didn't exist until the fountain it was directly connected with was closed. Unless a future chapter lets us exit a new dark world without closing the fountain I don't think leaving is an option.
i mean aside from Kris i can't really guess who it could be, aside from someone associated with the most mysterious and elusive entity in Undertale who's name shall not be named. Kris is such a red herring though, but it could be some sorta trick to making us this he "might not" be the knight but is actually the knight?
moreover i think the knight is a similar person to spamton and jevil, someone who was told some sort of information by a mysterious person, driven mad and is walking towards some sort of goal. i can't remember exactly as its been 2-3 years since i played ch2 but i think spamton sorta alluded to knowing more about the knight?
lol the knight could even be the mysterious Dess, Noelle's missing older sister.
May I ask why you think Kris is a red herring?
the game wants us to think Kris is the knight with how he creates a dark fountain at the end of the game but wouldn't King or Queen have recognised him? Kris only just learnt how to make a fountain from Queen at that time.
moreover think about when the cyberworld was made. Noelle and Berdly didn't seem to have immediately entered the dark world like Kris and Susie, they had time to walk into the library computer room and put their stuff on the table meaning it was probably just created as they were about to study, and Kris was asleep in the school at that time so how on earth would he have been there to make it? unless Kris has the ability to appear in two places at once or astral project himself and create a fountain elsewhere?
who knows. maybe Kris has the ability to time-delay the dark world fountain from fully being made? like he opened the cyberworld dark fountain in the night but made sure it didn't fully activate until Noelle and Berdly sat down in the library?
but i find it unlikely that could be the case..
or maybe Noelle and Berdly actually did enter the dark world and weren't aware of it until they fell into it. remember how Kris and Susie initially enter the dark world? they get to walk somewhat far into the storage-room before the ground underneath them "fell".
maybe something like that happened for N&B? it was "dark" yet they could see the desks&other stuff in the library computer room and for some reason didn't question it at all, went to put their stuff on the table and sit down in the chairs only for the floor to open up the entrance to the dark world.
honestly idk but imo i really think Kris is a red herring and "probably" isn't the knight.
I am fairly convinced that neither King nor Queen ever meet the knight. If anything it seems most likely that the knight did not enter the fountains they made when they were made. since I believe Kris to be the knight obviously they did enter them later.
Rather they set up the lightworld to be as they wished to get a result then like. King is a card so cannot see into the light world like queen with the computer camera. All he and everyone knows is "The knight" locked up the other kings, which could be done by simply taking the king cards and putting them in a box.
Queen also shows no evidence to have meet or even seen the knight in person, her only knowledge being the video recording of the Fountain being made, where it says the knight cannot be made out in the video. A video filmed from the computer placed right in the middle of the table pointing directly at Noelle and Berdly.
If the fountain was made as they were getting started to study not only should they have seen anyone that did make it but also be in the video even if it simply said that there was multiple figures that could not be made out.
I would suggest a diferent situation. The fountain was made last night, after the red herring genocide knife Kris thing was shown to us at the end of chapter 1. It would explain why Kris sleeps through the entire school day. Even if I do not think his lack of soul is as lethal as others, it would still take a while to get there and back, a few hours maybe. Kris also does set stuff up for the end of chapter fountain they make in plain sight, by plugging the TV in between chapters, and the bathroom sink Dialouge specifically stating "It is not yet time to wash your hands" if the player attempt to do so in the morning.
Also as we did see at the start of the game in the closet, the floor was strewn with paper before the dark world swallowed Kris and Susie, so its not impossible that the table was still there when Noelle and Berdly got there to study. Seeing the room dark might be a bit odd at first but really without any windows in there its not unreasonable to simply believe the lights just arent turned on. After all, Susie thought the same with the closet.
Also just a minor note, even assuming they stepped into the dark room and instantly fell into the dark world. We have only so far one data point on where people are when a dark world closes. Since the unused classroom was unlith so we didn't get to see where Susie and Kris were until they found the light switch.
Unlikely Kris has some specific dark world making ability yeah, but at least so far I think it could be a normal thing for a dark world to only fully forms once a lightner enters the space its made in. Again referencing to Susie and Kris being able to walk far into the school closet before the dark world actually formed and they fell in.
Just a minor note, but we see when Noelle and Berdly leaves that there are no chairs there, they were just leaning onto the table when they woke up.
Fair enough, only the future will tell who ends up correct!
I am convinced.
I mean how could I even argue against Chairiel, the beloved living room chair?
Lets hope Toby don't twist it to hard.
