Can Young Dragon ever grow up to an older and bigger dragon?
I somehow ended up with Young Golden Dragon and it was a bit crap. Most times I auto resolved it died so I would fight manual to keep it alive thinking it might grow up up, but so far it is still young and I'm sick of micromanaging the worthless thing.

You have to feed it gold, of course.

Child abuse is not cool. Children have to be raised with love or care if you want them to mature into well adjusted and productive adults.

Level it up to legendary rank and it will evolve into an adult.

It takes a while and a lot of xp, but all four young dragons become their legendary rank when they max out their rank.

Your best shot is to play some kind of Chaos/Nature build with a Dragon Lord as ruler.

Get the first evolution tome for the XP bonus to evolve units, get tome of revelry for the XP worldmap spell. Once you can recruit the Young Dragons, send them to your Dragon Ruler But only 3 of them.

Combat XP scales so that it doesn't matter wether you have 1 or 4 units, but with 5 or more units in combat the XP gets divided among them.

Well then just kill everything with your Dragon Ruler (who should be able to solo everything if you got the right Warrior build), let the young ones stay back because it doesn't matter for XP wether they fight or not.

With all the combined bonuses, and the minimized XP loss from only having 4 units in that army, it won't take too long to reliably level them up. This works best if you play on very large maps with plenty of stuff to kill. Like sweeping over an ocean region with mostly water elementals and kraken guarding the fishing grounds and reefs, you might be able to do 2-3 battles per turn.

Young dragons are fighter units, they don't have high defense and also large units.
If you want maxed out autobattle faceroll, get drafter hero and tome of evolution. Drafter will get free ranks, tome will give resurgence for units with evolution.
You just go and kill some random marauders and that's it.
Also vault gold wonder can proc evolution chamber, one of the rewards is Forced evolution spell.
Dragons, Wyverns, and any other unit with an evolution tag will evolve after reaching Legendary rank. If I remember correctly, the tag should resemble a butterfly; but that might also be the Fey tag.

The downside, however, is that once they evolve, they get busted back down to novice rank of their evolved form. Meaning you have to go through the process of leveling them up a second time.

You can also have them in an army with a mortal champion hero with the skill that gives passive 2 xp every turn. might not seem like much, but it adds up, especially in long games.
if a unit has the "Evolve" ability, it will upgrade once you reach legendary rank with it, advice would be looking at the "Tome of Evolution" (Tier 1) if you got the Dragon DLC (most likely do) as that will give bonus XP and survivabilty to EVOLVE units.

Add in stuff like the Draft buildings that give bonus Ranks to drafted units (or your tower that bonus's magical origin summoned units)
