So our goal is to create a universe rich in lore, which reacts to the player’s choices instead of a more linear traditional scripted adventure. (Quote from their own blog)
While I understand there is a small "story realm" (with only 5 maps?) stuff it doesn't really sound like an actual campaign in the way other AOE games (including Planetfall) did, just typical 4x stuff which, honestly I'm not really that interested in.

As for sandbox it is good if it offers high replayability and this is probably what devs want
Btw, Master of Magic was also recentrly remastered by MUXA, creators of mentioned above Thea.
Also I find the game really frustrating because even on low difficulty you barely have enough ressources to do anything it seems.
As for story based campaigns, Fantasy Wars+Elven Legacy, Kings Bounty and Fantasy General 2 offer quite a stories
And I already tried all of the games you suggested, though I honestly didn't really get into Kings Bounty and Fantasy General 2 for some reason.
Endless Legend, Eador and Thea have campaigns with story, but they also are sandboxy: Endles Legend is still more of 4x, Eador has many events and choices with multiple endings but story mostly happens between shard battles, Thea is full on story but has card based combat which is not everyones cup of tea.
Legends of Eisenwald is something I need to look into, thanks!
Though I still wonder why AoW 4 does away with an actual narrative campaign. I find it quite a shame that they do. I'll probably buy them anyways at some point (though probably not day 1) but I find it a shame that so many of these game have to become 4x(ish) games.
In addition to customized / randomly generated realms for your faction to explore and conquer, the devs have stated there are also 5 'story realms' which are connected to the plot of the campaign.
We do not know at this moment if each of the story realms are going to be spread out between normal realm sequences, or if we're free to choose them one after the other and speed run through the campaign. We'll have to wait for the devs to shed more information on that subject, though I suspect a concrete answer won't come until final release.
And with the ones you suggested....I kinda didn't enjoy any of those (Blackguard and Divinity have worlds and characters I didn't like because I'm not into grimdark/super dark fantasy, and Pathfinder is just too overwhelming for me, as someone who doesn't really play Tabletop RPGs.).
Battle Brothers and Wartales are some sort of strategy/RPG hybrids too with quite many units per battle compared to regular RPGs.
What I'm lookng for is a good substitute for Heroes of Might and Magic, which Age of Wonders was. Until it went full 4x and now there simply isn't a game similar to HoMM left (I am aware of The Dragoness but it doesn't seem to be particularly good). That is my problem here.
