in the pre made race list we do see a fiendish rodent but if you look at the icon than it is clearly a rat
The underground disciples have a strange different picture so perhaps they are a race. We will see. :) (can't wait...)
i would also find it pretty strange that they would have hidden a single race from the race selection screen.
but like you said, we will see :)
i forgot to mention this, but frostlings are no longer a race in old terms it seems, they are now a transformation.
at 36:02 in the gameplay reveal we see that they have given the berserker a frostling transformation. its at the bottom of the list of effects.
I'm guessing they're from different worlds.
The reveal video disusses how the title screen represents the "Mage Haven" which is the place between worlds where the wizards plan their invasions of various worlds.
So with the Shadow Realm and portals unlocked, we're getting cross-dimensional travel and wars. And some of those other worlds will have toad and rat people in them. This explains why race creation is now a feature: with an infinite (or just huge) amount of worlds to explore, you'll find all kinds of weirdness.
Frostlings will not be an independent race, but a possible evolution you can go down.
They state on their paradox website that they have "racial transformation" spells which will permanently alter your people and dictate how they evolve over the course of the story.
We see in their gameplay demo that the orcs they were using have been affected by the Frostling Transformation, which turns their skin blue and gives them some arctic themed advantages.
Among the possible transformations, we have confirmed that Frostlings, Angels, Demons and Undead are going to be possible. There may be others that have not been revealed yet, however.

oh wait you mean dungeon crawl stone soup; ok but thats an easy fix especially in a game with dozens of whacky races (still no excuse to put a hat on an elf and call it a new race of Hat Elves). AoW didnt just cut them it was part of the story to re-combine them after the events of #1
Baring in mind that the elves only split, because they were divided on their opinion of how to react to the humans massacring their people and seizing their land.
The wood elves wanted to overcome their trauma and move on, while the dark elves were consumed with their desire to seek vengeance. After they reconciled with each other, the race united once more and became the High Elves again.
