Do Atlas only lead to other Atlas?

When an atlas leads to a smaller reward, it comes with another atlas for your troubles, but usually they lead to big loot that doesn't necessarily contain an atlas

Yeah they feel kinda useless from what i have seen, it would be better if they lead to key recipes, like sawmill.

The progress in this game is almost backwards, you learn recipes but not technology to craft it, its not good. The mechanic of the hard-stone is also odd, should be able to use it for better tools and sword. And the honing process consuming stone is so odd, Yes to tool recipe to craft a honing stone,

the sawmill is already marked on your map from the start of the game.

Yeah i found that out later, but the atlases are still mostly useless, they just lead to other atlases
I always end up with a large stack of atlas rocks by the end; it was to the point that I wanted to be able to build some "atlas-man" totem with just those things or something. :) Alas, anything that leaves your inventory always does so as a bag, so I cant even build with them.... I only keep them in the hopes that when I new biome comes out they might become useful again....

Lol! Atlas-man would be awesome.

I, too, collect these baubles out of some vain "maybe someday" hope. Unfortunately, I don't think fixing the Atlas Two-Step is high on the priority list.

Yeah, me too. From my world, I don't understand what the atlases are about. I follow the breadcrumbs but no 'story' emerges?

atlas stones aren't meant to lead you to story islands. they lead you to either an island with major loot like anchors or knowledge stones or an island with minor loot like regular islands, but with the addition of a new atlas so you can give it another go.

aside from story islands that you find by following the question marks on your map, there is very little story to find, save some minor visual storytelling with abandoned structures.

i personally didn't bother with the atlas stones until i finished the story and didn't have a goal anymore. it's neat to have a set destination instead of just flying aimlessly from island to island.

that being said, the game just released in early access and it is possible the atlas stones will be given more features down the line.

i've had them lead to anchors and knowledge stones a number of times. i'd say across all my atlas stones about 1/3 had anchors or knowledge stones

i don't know if its random and luck plays a part in it. like i said, we might see more use for them in later updates

I suppose it's an expectation management issue :D
Since the atlases were given special markers and a button on the map, a collectable 'resource', 3d models for the landmark, and even a particular sound, my expectation was that they would be more central to the game somehow - if that makes sense? Maybe still to come...
