How to make coal / charcoal to draw with ?

The game is confusing me about coal and charcoal. Are they the same thing ? Can I make either one ? I have the campfire but no oven and no food trays.

I have plenty of paper but cannot draw on it.

You have to make a sketch book. You can occasionally find them, or you can make one if you have all of the pieces. I think it is charcoal, rope, and paper, but don't quote me on that. Field guide I think is paper, leaf cloth, and rope. You may need to play around with recipes. You can also find the field guide as well. When you deconstruct, you get all of the parts, so if you find one you can deconstruct it, then reconstruct it from the parts and you will add the recipe that way.

Once you have the sketch book, the charcoal is included so you just need paper when you sketch new things.

Not quite true, sketch book has some charcoal, but as one sketches things you have to find more. I don't believe it's craftable yet; however look for the "burned out" tree stump and firepits to harvest for more

You can get charcoal from fires left behind with the pick axe.

I'm still looking for a resource-able way to make more charcoal though. Is there not a BP to make more from, like a furnace of some kind.

yes please! Farming for treestumps is sooo boring.

Yeah, I would like to like perhaps be able to put wood into the food pit and perhaps get charcoal from it

The devs have got lightning blasted trees nearly ready. It's semi random because it requires a storm but it's supposed to give more charcoal than stumps. I didn't read anything about crafting it though and from what I read this is their answer to more charcoal so I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for it.

As has been spotted upthread, the English interface for the game uses both the words 'coal' and 'charcoal'. They refer to the same thing and I'm pretty sure they should both be 'charcoal'.

There is no way in the current version of the game to make more charcoal / coal. This places a limit on the game, since you need it to make drinking water. I expect this to be corrected before the game is launched. In the meantime, make sure you hold some dirty water when you water your crops, since the game knows to use dirty water rather than clean water if you have both.

There is plenty of charcoal in the game to let you finish the game. I have almost 100 spare pieces even though I have sketched almost all the designs currently available. You may think you're about to run out, especially if you make a lot of drinking water, but you won't.

Coal used to be in the game, it was replaced by charcoal for ecological reasons. But it's possible that some items still refer to coal.

Ps, we will be adding a way to "make charcoal" in the future :)
