Tiny Island
After choosing a home island and building the ship elements, I checked the map and selected the first island I could see that was unexplored (had a ?) I added a waypoint and it was right next to my home island. I turned around but couldnt see anything other than a green bar of light. When I flew closer on my glider I found the waypoint was bigger than the island which was basically 1 tree on a tiny circle of land that was barely large enough to land on. After several near misses, I finally hit the bullseye and removed the ? from the map marker.

Should the procedural generation of the islands at least have a minimum size as this island seemed ridiculously small, and no value to the player apart from the 1 tree which I left and didnt cut down. I noticed that several other unexplored islands in my starting sector were similarly sized "tiny" lumps of rock that I had not bothered landing on while exploring as they were not worth checking out and had little resources, but I ended up visiting them just to clear the unexplored marks on the map.

There's no procedural generation in the game, all islands are handmade! What you found is called an IBI by the community (Itty bitty island) ^^ It is the most sought after island, for a very specific reason: It's so small that you can build your house AROUND it, and hide the IBI in the foundations / basement! Players build entire ships around them, giving them the feeling of flying a skyship instead of a floating island :p Now the original reason why it's in the game is because we thought it was cute and funny to have such a small one in there ahaha
Okay Fine. I did find a wreck that was more building than island, floating above a larger island that looked like it was a wrecked dock. I dont see how anyone could actually build on the itty bitty island since there was hardly any place to stand. And if you cut down the only tree, why would that not trigger the ecosystem alert as per the island which you had to plant trees on to bring it back to 100%. Seems inconsistent and breaks the immersion. How would the island even float and how would a full grown tree exist on a tiny sliver of land. Without a proper root system it would collapse under its own weight in even the lightest of winds.

How do you manage to mark a destination on the map? I can't set a marker there.

At a certain point in the game you unlock the mapping table. Once built on your home island, you right click on the island to add a waypoint. Can also be done using the spyglass which can be discovered on the workbench if you have the materials. You use the spyglass and click when viewing an island to toggle the waypoint on and off. The mapping table will show you which islands have been explored and which have not been visited with a ?

You are thinking way too hard about this mate.
This is not physics heavy hard science kind of game. This is a relaxed and chill game that uses minecraft rules for building. You can build something to place something else where you want it, then tear down the things you built it on and it will never fall, and still function as if it is rooted to the island you built from.

LOL, okay, I'll calm down, although there was nothing chill about trying to land on a 20c piece. Just saying.
To fly very slowly, right-click while flying. Very useful for precision approaches to cave entrances in the base of islands.
I'm so glad I found this post! Now I'm about to hunt down my own IBI!

Good luck! :) if the waypoint is bigger than the island you have stuck gold :)

Oh I got there..... I'm just saying there was nothing "chill" about it and trying to do it my first few hours into the game was not fun :D

Wait what... You can build AROUND an island? How did I miss this?! Granted, only playing for the second time now. I was looking for information on the natural sounds I have on my island. The one I have is pretty big but I love the sounds it has. I haven't heard those sounds on any other island so far. I did find an island I considered building my home on instead, but it didn't have the frog sounds and such... So I reconsidered ^^'
You found a great gift. While the one I found wasn't as small as that, I turned it into a scout boat and it has become my favorite little base in the game!

It is essentially in every game I've seen (mine and friends worlds), in the starter set of islands up behind the waterfall island (behind the spawn island). Since I wanted to explore the farming and animal husbandry aspects of the game as well as the base building I took the island directly behind the spawn island with the nice waterfall and multiple levels for building. Its a big "chonky" island but not too big so you can keep a lot of animals without hitting the limit, and there is a water source for farming.

I guess if you did build a ship on the IBI (itty bitty island), you are then just dependent on gathering everything you need from the explored islands. What would be nice in future (maybe for multiplayer) would be a way to chain islands together (almost like the Leviathan) so you can spawn in an IBI ship and dock or moor it to your home island.

I found navigating the "barriers" was a nightmare and I was constantly repairing sails, so a "smaller" ship might be able to slip through easier, or in future the ability to build "defenses" on a larger island might be nice. If you got stuck in the barrier with broken sails and no more materials to rebuild or regrow, then I guess you could be stuck permanently.
after many attempts at building a huge base on a huge island and consistently running into performance issues as the base grew in size, i've settled for that tiny little island and an airship built around it. i've managed to squeeze all the crafting stations and all the different kinds of storage in a pretty tiny ship.

sucks to not have nearly as easy access to animal products but at least i can fly while above 30fps now.
