Yeah I was answering crimson's question, but my original answer if what you're looking for! Those symbols don't appear naturally on islands, they're placed by yourself through the beacons that you unlock at some point. Those on the right are to filter through your placed beacons

That's not the case in my game, I've only just placed the map table and haven't unlocked beacons yet, but several unexplored islands show the beacon symbols
i think Mifuyne got the right idea. the icons on the map that should only appear from beacons, like the triangle icon, are from naturally occurring settlements that have a beacon already built on them.

i haven't seen any like that personally though so i can't test it out myself
Yeah, a few islands are marked with the triangle without me ever putting them there, and with no way to remove them.
The triangle with inner swirly marker disappeared for me when I found a notebook on a stump and picked it up.
Can confirm, it's the perfectly round cylinder stump-shaped beacon. You can disassemble with the hammer and the mark goes away

The islands with the symbols have beacons placed on them naturally that you can find and sketch with the sketchbook, which someone already answered but in a different way.
so i'm confused. whats the point of the beacons?

To categorize islands that you want to come back to.

what I'm talking about is the symbols on the side of the map table screen, specifically the triangular one with the triangular spiral in the centre as one of the islands in the first zone spawned with that, and I do not know whether I should be looking for some important item or just moving on

Small point of order: Some spawned islands spawn with things made from the buildables to the right of the default beacons (totem pole like objects, stacks of stones, etc), all of which are represented by the triangle with a swirl on it. I figured that out myself while exploring, that some of those items have been used to create standing stones on islands but also place beacons, possibly unintentionally, and always with the triangle symbol.
I was very confused by it, I also had a triangle mark on an island and some people mentioned it can be related to notebook on a stump so I went to the place where the notebook was and the stump itself was a beacon. I used my sketchbook to look for unlearned recipes and noticed the stump showed yellow for me, upon sketching it unlocked beacons. removing the stump made the triangle with the spiral disappear
