Feed your Research Lab.
….where do I find the research lab? I’ve got the upgrade station with the sharpening station…I feel like I’m missing something big
Third Fresco location, in the second sector. Follow the ? on the map.

Ahh thanks, yeah I haven’t completed the step 2 fresco cos I need the coating station to get through the rot I guess
Nope! You must:
  1. complete the island,
  2. get the fresco,
  3. build the lab,
  4. research Tier 1 Identification,
  5. build the coating station, then
  6. go back to get the optional goodies hidden by the cages that require a coated weapon.
Be sure to have several Lost Keys.
Thanks mate!

Welp not sure what version you're on but loaded up 2 new games and both dont look like that.
Well I take it back. Just explored the third area. You cant clence that island either because you need to coat your weapon. So both zone 2 and 3 can not be competed because you need to coat your weapon, and you cant do that with out lab. and you cant get the lab with out a coated weapon, and so on. Nice job devs.

I'm pretty sure you're missing something. I just cleared the second fresco location (new character, new world) about 10-11 hours ago. I realize that it looks like you need a coating to get the fresco, but you certainly do not. You do need at least one Lost Key, but that can be found on the island.
I wrote this last night ("Step II" in Biome 1):
Then, I must build a Table-map (probably right next to my helm):
  1. to place a waypoint at the island marked by a ? in the second sector
  2. to stop at some unexplored islands that I pass (learning things like Cooking Plate/Campfire, Compost Bin, and Leaf Bed along the way -- see "Blueprints" below) and grab all their loot (see Step IV)
  3. to get to that ? island and remove the Corruption (all Mykter Trees are sitting out in the open, around the periphery)
  4. to find my way into the heart of the island by one of two ways:
    • I could go to the top and work my way down, defeating the corruption cores along the way
    • I could circle the island by glider, looking for a lost key; there I will also find a small crevice that I can mine away into a passageway (this is the sneaky method, but I will have to "backtrack" up the stairs to get one of the corruption cores)
  5. to enter the chamber* and defeat both corruption cores + enemies
  6. to find the crucial fresco there (<Research Lab>)
* I must be sure to bring 5 (five) Lost Keys to this chamber (one for the door and four for the Intricate Chests -- I mustn't forget the three behind the fresco). Also, I will need to revisit this island with a sword coated in fungicide (after I've done Step III, below) to remove those cages blocking off precious resources -- including one more Intricate Chest requiring a sixth key. But first: get the fresco's blueprint for a Research Lab.

You are using an older map version. Just rolled back game and loaded and old save and made a new game with older version. Both had it so I could get to the research lab vestige.
The updated game added the need for coated weapons to get to lab.
to find my way into the heart of the island by one of two ways:
This is what I remember as well. My first game pass I did it the hard way but saw that the other way was possible (they always leave a pickaxe in the rubble to give you a hint) and dug/squeezed my way out to see where it comes out at. (frankly, you gotta be in just the right place and know what you are looking at...the entrance is not obvious). I think the 1st time I had even snitched the key thats part of the marker at the "secret way in", and didnt even think twice. 2nd time... I came in that way and it was very nice :)

It would be good to have an aerial view of the top way in though, as well. And as nice as at loot is in those chests, you only have to have the single key (which they do give you at least one of on the island)

Next time I'm taking pictures, I'll update the guide with them.

I'm really concerned that we may be getting argumentative! Please, don't mistake what I'm saying as "fighting words." I understand where you are coming from.

Let me try a different approach:
  • Have you found the big, locked door to the fresco room?
  • If so, were you able to get inside?
  • If so, did you see the fresco?
  • If so, was it blocked in any way?
  • If so, did you try to restore the ecosystem by removing all of the Corruption Cores?
I understand that the three cages blocking certain resources and chests are new to the update version 0.3.1.13. I also understand that they can't be removed without a coated weapon, which you can't get without the Research Lab. But I don't think that you understand that these cages are optional -- they do not hinder your progression at all. You can go back to the island to remove them, after doing Step III "Know Your Enemy", but you don't have to.

I sympathize with your frustration. Again, I am not trying to get into a fight (learned that lesson the hard way, last summer -- different game forum). I really am just trying to help you with a frustrating part of the game.

I ran through with the patch before this one yesterday, and didnt have trouble; I went down the "normal" way from the top to look for sketches, but then came back up and went in the secret path we talked about above.

Worstcase, if we are totally wrong here, and anyone feels locked out in any way, and cant figure it out:
1) Take a pic of whats stopping you.
2)
F1 "noclip on 3". You can now fly through walls and past that barrier. WASD moves you, and space/ctrl is up/down. F1 "noclip off" to turn it off once you are past the barrier

Use that to leave if you have to as well (but I suspect you can unlock the door from the other side)
