Yes you are right. I have been through several times with just 2 sails though.
I have always wondered just how difficult/costly it is to bring the largest island we can possibly drive across the barrier.... ie one that actually NEEDS 6+ sails in order to even move, and has little hope of avoiding the rocks. I can drive an IBI through the barrier with no/little cost to refix the sails... but when I drove my smallish medium island through (4 sails, not expanded to full size) I consistently had to spend 80+ cloth on the sails to make it. Clearly I am not good at this part....
Now I have a spanish galleon I built using the super tiny island south of the starting area, makes it thru in 10 sec without getting hit lol.
The sails need space cleared around them to be effective at catching wind. More flexible sails are better for going against the wind, ie Bermuda sails.
